Talking UPDATE: Crytek says PS3 Crysis Will Look Like High End PC

Quote:
It's no secret that CryTek is bringing over its revolutionary CryENGINE over to PS3. In fact, they showed off some behind-the-scenes demos to developers at GDC. While CryTek doesn't confirm the long-rumored PS3 version of Crysis in their interview with IGN, they do make a few notes about the process of bringing such a power-hungry engine over to Sony's home console.

Harald Seeley, Engine Business Manager for CryTek, said "there is no doubt that porting our engine to the PlayStation 3 is the more challenging of our two ongoing conversion projects [Xbox 360 and PS3]." However, that isn't necessarily a bad thing: "that works to our advantage in the end. We feel certain we have the ability to get the most that is possible out of that platform, and therefore PS3 games which run on our engine in the future will definitely stand significantly apart from other games that don't."

While we still haven't seen footage running on a PS3, Seeley is confident that the engine will look like nothing else on consoles so far. "We expect the final outcome will result in games that look like they're running at high settings, or nearly high settings, on a PC." We'd love to see what CryTek is capable of pulling off.
So the 360 is easier to dev for, but the PS3 will take longer but reap more rewards. I'll take that.

Thank you Crytek!!!!

Also, EA still haven't confirmed Crysis for PS3 (but CryTek has in other sources and had their wrists slapped for it.)

More good news for PS3 owners. The wait is paying off as top tier devs are putting in the time needed to bring out the power of the beast.

I thought Consoles could not contend with a good PC gaming rig...

There was an article in Game Informer that listed like 5 PCs all at or below 1499.99 and one of their criteria was how well each played Crysis at medium settings.. Is the PS3 that powerful where it can compete with PC rigs costing 3x as much?

I never really knew too much about the PS3's internals but I knew it was good, I guess I just didn't know how good..

I'm sure it will look great, but the bottom line that none can deny is that it has 256mb of systerm memory, and 256mb of video memory. No more, and no less. It also depends on what that guy considers to be his definition of a high end PC. My definition of a high end PC is a PC running an AMD Phenom/Intel Core 2 Duo quad core with 4gb of DDR2 or DDR3 memory and a pair of nVidia 8800GTX's with 768mb of video memory running in SLI.

speaking of i'm going to be building one this summer.

that's great now lets hope they are not just hyping it up. that seems to be the norm these days.

i will hold my comments until the game is actually released. they can say it's the greatest looking game ever. next thing we know it sells but everyone gets it home and they have a lair situation or the framerates or horriable.

lets see it first and then lets talk.

am i missing something?

i don't belive he is saying the ps3 version will look or play better then the 360 version. all he is saying is that games with this engine will look better then games that don't use it. he is saying because they are taking the time they are able to learn more about the ps3 then other devs are willing to do. he is saying you will see improved graphics over other ps3 games plus 360 games.

this isn't a 360 v.s. ps3 ability statment. i can see where it would be taken that way but read it again because it's definetly not.

so since all things are still equal it still sucks that it will take longer to dev for the ps3.

lets all hope that since they are taking the extra time now that later releases benifit from this.

High or nearly high settings? That's it? The way people praise the all mighty cell I'd have figured it could do more. 6 months ago my PC could run Crysis on high with DX10 enabled... today it can probably run it on very high across the board.

i thought it was funny also but i figured mentioning that would start a fight.

glad to see someone else caught it.

Well, I'm not knocking it or anything. It's just, for a while, I actually thought that the cell was more powerful than a PC processor. The way some fanboys would tout its superiority over everything else I just naturally assumed.

Apparently I was wrong.

The memory is an issue. The cell is doing all kinds of work that would be done with RAM in a PC. I'm just happy that high end devs are getting the most out of a console.

I think "high PC" setting are pretty good for a console. You've seen Orange Box on consoles. That's low to maybe medium on a PC.

They're talking about their Crytek engine, not Crysis. They're going to be leasing out their Cryengine2 to developers specifically for consoles.

Ummm, guys, they never specified the resolution.

The PS3/360 have the hardware to most likely run Crysis on High settings with +30FPS if the game is rendered at a lower resolution (600-640p ala CoD4/Halo3) and let the scalars kick in to upscale it to whatever resolution we have our consoles set to.

Will the 360/PS3 run Crysis on high rendered natively at 1920x1080? Oh, hell no! If my gaming PC chugs at Medium at 1920x1080 n way any of these consoles could do it.

Majority of AAA games on either console aren't rendered natively at 1920x1080, because the hardware can't handle it. But, I've yet to hear people (except some like me that scream false advertisement) give a hoot if CoD4 if rendered at 600p and Halo3 is rendered at 640p.
