Wii to pass 360 by June in the USA

Nintendo believes its Wii console will pass the total installed base for Xbox 360 in the USA by June.

Regional boss Reggie Fils-Aime made the bold if unsurprising claim to Bloomberg, and pointed to mid-2008 releases of Wii Fit and Super Smash Bros. Brawl as the reason why.

The most recent data shows Wii with over 8 million sales in the USA, which is slightly behind the Xbox 360 total of over 9 million.

However, Wii has been outselling rivals PS3 and Xbox 360 around the world and was crowned the generation leader by The Financial Times in September 2007.

The Wii has sold over 20 million units worldwide, the Xbox 360 has sold 18 million, and the PS3 more than 10 million.

Interestingly all three platform holders count the US as their largest market, although Wii, and to a lesser extent PS3, enjoy success in Japan.

The PS3 is also expected to gain considerable momentum in 2008 from the recent discontinuation of HD-DVD, as well as from key releases like Metal Gear Solid 4.

I'm not surprised at all. At this point i know tons of much older and younger people who own a Wii. they love the sports games like bowling and boxing. alot of them love having weekend matches v.s. their friends and family.

my wife for the first time played the boxing and she asked me just the other day if i wanted to buy a Wii for her. she thought it was great exersise and so much fun.

The Wii might not be what most people on this forum look for but it definetly did a dam well job with its targeted base.

my wife wants to get a Wii so freaking bad.. i could care less about it. its a cheap inexpensive console with a ton ton of kiddie games(spongebob square pants) i was looking at what kind of games they got, and seriously, theres like nothing i would like, other then maybe mario and zelda(maybe metroid too).. but RE4? i played the GC and PS2 verison of this game, why the heck would i spend money on a Wii verison?, RE4 is a old game. you look at IGn and their reviews and literally over half of the games in the 9's and 8's are "virtual console"..

It's a surprisingly fun system to have, but I certainly wouldn't want to have it be my sole console. Much like every other Nintendo released since the SNES, the first party titles are outstanding while everything else is entirely forgetable.

Personally I think it's worth the purchase price just to play Mario titles, and the sports games for it are just the icing on the cake. I wasn't expecting to like WiiSports, but I do drag it out when there are people over and everyone loves it.

As far as Resident Evil goes, you'd be surprised how much fun it is on there. I had it on GC as well, and this version is far superior. Not only does the new control scheme really add another level of immersion to the title, it makes the game more intuitive and easier to play. For example, you can just slash the Wiimote in front of you to use the knife attack, and then instantly return to shooting; It works great. The game itself also looks and sounds a good deal better as well. I never had any of the proper cabling/adaptors to hook my GC up in progScan (480p) and Dolby Pro-Logic 2 sound, so it is a huge step up for me.

RE:Umbrella chronicles is a lot of fun too and my wife absolutely loves it.

As far as availablity goes, I couldn't argue there; I tried for months after release to get one and eventually ended up having to sit outside a Circuit City on a shipment day for a couple of hours before it opened to get one.

I wouldn't trade my 360 for it, but it's a great console. It has a really wide appeal, lots of innovative titles and amazing backwards compatability.
