August NPD: Wii and Madden Lead Sales

August video game sales data from research firm NPD has arrived and although there were no surprises, there are some interesting figures to report.

As expected, both the Nintendo Wii and DS took the two top spots. Even so, Xbox 360 hardware sales were up 63 percent month over month, versus an 18 percent decline for PS3 and a 5 percent decline for the Wii. It’s clear that the Xbox 360 price cut has benefited Microsoft while Sony can’t say the same thing.

When it comes to software sales, well, it’s August and that means that Madden was the best selling game but there were a few surprises.

The Xbox 360 version of Madden took the top spot and with 896K units sold, it outsold all other versions of the game, including the PS2 by more than 250,000 units, and PS3 by more than 560,000.
