Tonight, Microsoft issued a press release—which concurred with the release of the Halo 3 beta to those who qualified—detailing the fall release dates for the highly anticipated game in the U.S. and Europe, as well as providing info on a special-edition, Halo 3-themed Zune media player that'll hit stores next month. Here's the full text of the announcement:

LOS ANGELES — May 15, 2007 — In a year when Hollywood is launching its biggest blockbusters ever, a video game is set to conquer them all. “Halo® 3,” the final chapter in the groundbreaking “Halo” trilogy, is set to shatter day-one entertainment sales records when it is released worldwide beginning Tuesday, Sept. 25. Fueling the early buzz around “Halo 3”, Microsoft unveiled the multiplayer beta on the eve of its release at a star-studded event in Hollywood. Beginning tomorrow, May 16, Microsoft Game Studios will kick off the “Halo 3” multiplayer beta, which provides audiences worldwide with an exclusive, early look at some of the multiplayer elements of “Halo 3” on Xbox LIVE®. Adding to the excitement, Microsoft is also announcing a special edition Zune™ digital media player inspired by the hugely successful “Halo” franchise. On shelves next month, the Zune-Halo 3 edition comes loaded with a collection of “Halo” content, including videos, soundtracks, trailers, ads and artwork.

In November 2004, the world’s view of video games changed forever with the release of “Halo 2,” which generated a record-setting $125 million in sales within the first 24 hours and changed the way people think about interactive entertainment. Three years later, it remains the most-played game on Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE online gaming and entertainment network, with nearly 1 billion hours of online gaming logged to date.

The unveiling of the “Halo 3” launch date comes on the eve of the release of the “Halo 3” multiplayer beta, which will debut to audiences worldwide via Xbox LIVE on May 16 at 5 a.m. PDT and run through June 6 at 11:59 p.m. PDT.* The “Halo 3” multiplayer beta will provide audiences worldwide with an exclusive early look at some of the multiplayer elements of “Halo 3” on Xbox LIVE. Gamers who are interested in experiencing the multiplayer beta of “Halo 3” can still participate through the purchase of the critically acclaimed, Xbox 360-exclusive title “Crackdown™,” which was launched in February. Starting May 16, the specially marked copies of “Crackdown” will act as a key for gamers to participate in the “Halo 3” multiplayer beta. In addition to giving gamers their first opportunity to get their hands on the new levels, weapons, vehicles and game types, the multiplayer beta will also provide valuable data that Bungie will use in continued development.

The “Halo” franchise has expanded beyond video games into The New York Times’ best-selling books, graphic novels, collectible merchandise and now a new, special edition Zune digital media player. This was expected. 360 needs a title that should almost guarantee it gets the most sales this year. Halo 3 should sell about 15 million worldwide this year. Let the Halo 3 hype begin....

I'm not sure about this, as I think this release date is way too early. I know they don't want to compete against GTA4, but what about releasing this game sometime early or midway through November before the Thanksgiving holiday? I know that there are a lot of guys working hard, but i'm concerned about whether this game will be ready or not with a high level of quality by that date. It would really tear me apart if this game disappointed me because it needed more time to be refined. This is exactly the game that could really explode X360 adoption rates if it delivers on everything when combined with a price drop on the console. Sony definately has to be worried as it appears that their biggest titles may not hit till sometime in 2008(from what i've heard).

Anyone see the Halo Zune player that is hitting the market soon? I am tempted although I really don't like the subpar audio quality of mp3's.

A real hardcore Halo fan wouldn't worry about little things like that.

That's the only reason why i'm finally considering a Zune! I am a true Halo nut and this would be awesome to have a halo themed mp3 player. The problem is that I don't like mp3's due to the low quality. If there were music sites that allowed you to buy and download full CD quality songs at a reasonable price, i'd go that route instantly.

From what I've played of the beta so far, Halo 3 looks and plays great.

Its not mind-boggling - Its very much like Halo 2, with High Def graphics, new weapons/vehicles and better physics. And the best part is they seemed to use their same matchmaking.

Yeah in terms of development time, Halo 3 has had plenty of time. The question is how innovative it will be. I have never really played the Halo series but from the multiplayer clips I saw, it reminds me of unreal tournie.
