i dont know if this is old but....Xbox 360 will run Blu-ray if HD-DVD loses format battle
Filed under: Xbox 360 Posted: Mar 23rd 2007 by Andrew Macarthy Canny tactics from Microsoft? In an interview with the BBC, Xbox UK head Neil Thompson has stated that the Xbox 360 will support whichever next-generation DVD format ends up coming out on top in the battle between Sony-backed Blu-ray and Toshiba-backed HD-DVD. “Whatever format wins it is highly likely we will offer a solution. The only debate is if you want to watch Blu-ray movies and pay the extra money for that feature. We prefer to offer the consumer choice." Microsoft is known to favour the HD-DVD format (not least because the company has released an add-on for the Xbox 360 to play such discs), but many believe that one of the major factors in its support for HD-DVD is because the Blu-ray format is sponsored by Sony, its main rival in the console arena - and, of course, the PlayStation 3 runs Blu-ray discs. Thompson's words compound the comments of Peter Moore, Microsoft's VP of Xbox Marketing, who told Japanese website ITmedia in January or 2006 that a Blu-ray add-on drive for the Xbox 360 (in addition to the HD-DVD drive already available) would not be out of the question. Ideally, Microsoft hopes that the popularity of HD-DVD will dominate Blu-ray, leaving the expensive disc drive in Sony's PlayStation 3 somewhat redundant. Microsoft has always remained confident about the prospect of HD-DVD trumping Blu-ray in the biggest format war in years, but recent figures from Nielsen VideoScan suggest that Blu-ray is outselling its rival for the first time. The data shows that Blu-ray movies outsold those released for the HD-DVD format by more than a 2-to-1 margin during the first week of January this year, equating to 47.14 HD-DVD titles sold for every 100 Blu-ray titles. However, that said, it's also worth noting that the markedly cheaper hardware on offer through HD-DVD has seen better sales performance for the format when compared to Blu-ray (particularly in Europe where, until yesterday, Blu-ray hardware sales were not bolstered by the PS3).
