Default Legal Hack Makes Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive Work on PCs

As per TeamXbox:

Legal Hack Makes Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive Work on PCs
By: César A. Berardini - "Cesar"

A known by the name of BluePrint has figured out a way to use the Xbox 360 HD DVD player on a personal computer without the need of an Xbox 360. In a statement included in a .nfo file, BluePrint says:

We're now able to read the UDF (Universal Disc Filesystem) v2.5 which is currently used by the Toshiba Corp with there first generatioLegal Hack Makes Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive Work on PCsn HD-DVDRom drives. You can see the entire contents of the HD-DVD Media when in the drive.

Again, these are litterally Toshiba Corp drivers for the file system used with HD-DVD.

Obviously, the hardware required to playback a HD DVD movie is way more expensive than an Xbox 360 console but for those who already own such computer and don't want to get an Xbox 360 in order to watch HD DVD movies, this is definitely an option.
The following image shows how the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive appears on a personal computer running Windows XP:

Thanks Xbox-Scene for the heads up.

Anybody try this? I know my home pc would do it, but I would imagine my little celery laptop would be hard pressed to do it...even though it plays back my hdcamcorder footage just fine. Yet another reason why I find playback of hddvd on the 360 so taxing, maybe it has to do with the bit rate...no?

This is not a good thing if you love HD DVD. This hack is 1 step away from some geek cracking the AACS on his PC which would be extremely bad news for the future of HD DVD. I wonder how the DVD forum feels about all this....

I agree. There are some really smart ***$@@###'s who could crack it, and then open the entire format up for widescale piracy. Just imagine how bad this would be once the Chinese and Indians figure out a way, as those are the centre of piracy in the world.

I'm not talking about an internet forum, I'm talking about the DVD forum AKA the governing body of DVD and HD DVD, the decision makers about everything done with the formats. Cracking the AACS will mean death for HD DVD as no studio would ever go neutral for a format that's copy protection has been cracked. AACS is for both HD DVD and Blu-ray but luckily Blu-ray has an additional layer of unique protection (normally optional, but I doubt many studios will go without it once AACS is cracked).

Go for it, man. I'm just saying this could be bad news for HD DVD fans. This kind of stuff inspires hackers.

And you don't think someone will come up with the same thing for bluray? Given enough time, anything can be hacked.

There is none. And that Toshiba drive very well may be the exact same drive that makes up the 360 add on.

That's the thing. You can crack BD+ but like I said it is unique from disc to disc. If someone cracks it for a certain disc, the studio can/will change the code for the next one. Cracking BD+ won't doom a format like cracking AACS does.

DVD Fab can allready break the anti piracy encoding on HDDVD's and Memorex is releasing both HD DVD and BD blnks in the not so distant future so the drives are likeley due out very soon. My BIL has an HD DVD rom drive in his new toshiba laptop and we tried DVD Fab on the new Batman HD DVD and it backed it up with no problems at all. Here is the link to the memorex blank media page.

I checked the DVD Fab site earlier at work and coudln't find anything about HD DVD. Maybe they just aren't advertising it? The Batman HD DVD played at full res on an HD DVD player? Not calling you a liar but I'm shocked haven't heard of anyone cracking the AACS code if it's already been done.

Yep he bought the movie and we loaded up DVD Fab 3030 and it ripped the movie no problems at all. So I am now wondering with Memorex offering up both BD and HD DVD blank media who will be the first to offer up the hardware to take advantage of it and will Toshiba jump on it right away and offer burners.
