Default PS3 launch month: Nov for japan

If this is true, M$ mayhave 2 Xmas lead over PS3... As Carlitto would say "That's not cool".

http://gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=15354

Japanese newspaper reports PlayStation 3 delayed to November

Rob Fahey 19:01 03/13/2006

Six month delay caused by unresolved technical issues with Blu-Ray

One of Japan's leading newspapers, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, is
reporting in its Wednesday morning edition that the PlayStation 3
console has been delayed to November due to unresolved issues with the
Blu-Ray technology.

According to the paper, the problem lies with the copy protection
system used by Blu-Ray, details of which have not yet been finalised -
which will now cause a delay of some six months to Sony's PS3 plans.

Sony has always maintained that the PS3 will launch in spring of this
year, but most industry commentators and third-party publishers are
currently anticipating US and Japanese launches late in 2006, followed
by a European launch in early 2007.

If the Japanese launch doesn't occur until November, that could put any
hope of a US launch in 2006 in jeopardy - which would give rival
Microsoft a second Christmas on the market before the arrival of PS3 in
the US as well as in Europe, as well as giving Nintendo a head-start
with the Revolution console.

The newspaper report comes just hours before Sony Computer
Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi is due to address a conference audience
of media, analysts and third party publishers in Tokyo, where he is
expected to announce details of the firm's plans for the
next-generation PS3 system.

However, it's not clear whether Nihon Keizai Shimbun is reporting on
leaked details from this conference, or whether the report is based on
information from other sources. Speculation that technical problems
with Blu-Ray could delay the roll-out of PS3 has been rife for well
over a month, and has not been quelled by the announcement that Blu-Ray
movie players will ship in North America in mid-May.

Sony's conference is planned for 3pm in Tokyo on Wednesday - around 6am
GMT - and is also expected to feature a first look at some of the
launch line-up for the console.

Though NDAs on Sony's business conference have yet to be lifted, Wall
Street financial sources seem to confirm that the Playstation 3 will
not be hitting shelves until at least November of this year:

14-Mar-06 12:28 ET In Play Sony to delay the release of its PlayStation
3 next-generation video game console - DJ (SNE) 47.48 +0.71: Dow Jones
reporting that Sony Computer Entertainment will delay the release of
its PlayStation 3 next-generation video game console until early
November because the copy protection technology for the Blu-ray Disc has not been finalized, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its
Wednesday morning edition.

Considering that the original report came from a Japanese newspaper, it is assumed that the Novemeber release date is intended for Japan.
Unless there is a simultaneous release in the US, as well, domestic
gamers may not see the PS3 until 2007. If the Blu-ray copy protection isn't finished, that may also delay the release of Sony's standalone players for the new format, giving HD-DVD a slight edge.

Once the NDAs are lifted and more details are confirmed, we'll have
them for you.

This would be awesome. I would love MS to have a nice fat start over Sony..their bs piracy crap and the fact they love to lie about what their products can do, 1080P etc

SONY is obviously not worried about their fanbase dwindling... Let's hope their wise in their laid back attitude about it. Also, even though several game sites have reported this "official news" it won't really be official until ken kuturagi speaks tonight (midnight PST). We'll see what happens folks it should be an interesting one!

guess all that speculation isnt just speculation. i laugh when i read kids saying sony should just drop the bluray. i dont think they understand bluray is more important to sony then anything else they got going.

think about it this way. how may movies do you own? imagine if sony got a cut from every movie you owned or rented. then they got a cut from every game from there ps3. if microsoft owned the rights to hddvd then they would have never dropped it. just to much money involved. hddvd is gonna have a huge lead if it can get out soon enough.

i cant wait to buy my sxrd next month. so i can play my 360 on it.

bboncorr you're correct in yoru statement. PS3 is indeed much more to SONY than a game console, and they aren't going to rush something that holds so much more financial potential to them than even the PS2 had. Rest assured PS3 will not dissappoint, SONY won't risk losing their large consumer base.

I think this could spell real trouble for Sony; Microsoft having a 1+ year lead will give the XBox360 a significant catalog of games. Yes, the PS2 came back against the Dreamcast under similar circumstances, but that was partly because Sega didn't have the money to support the Dreamcast properly. That won't be a problem for Microsoft.

Anyhow, the immediate impact for a gamer like myself is that 720p looks good enough to meet my near-term needs.

I think sony is worried, they should be. But they understand that the next-gen DVD war is bigger than the next-gen console war. If BR becomes the standard, then Sony made a wise decision. If HD-DVD wins, sony is in deep, deep trouble. Either way, sony will be struggling financially for the next few years.

i dont think either company is scared of the rev. im sure it will be a good console and people who buy it will like it. but it is not going to be on the same level as the 360 or ps3. nintendos streangth has always been its selection of games and loyal fans of those games. to me there building an alternitive product not a real compeditor. i believe nintendo has admitted this. there trying not to compete with the other systems.

If the Rev was HD, I would be all over it... imagine Super Mario Sunshine or Zelda Wind Waker in crisp 1080i with improved graphics. Oh well, way to drop the ball, Nintendo... I understand what Nintendo is trying to do, prove that great gameplay and having fun should triumph over newer technologies. But I didn't buy a $1500 HDTV to play cute little 480i games, I bought it so I can hear the best audio and see the best video around. Only Sony and MS are doing that and I'm about to rule out Sony cuz I'm sick of their sh*t, there is no GOOD reason the PS3 can't make it to the states by the end of the year.

According to IGN, the November launch is simultaneous around the world. Sony knows that they can't let Microsoft get that much of a lead, so they're gonna do it the we wish they'd release every system. Ken Kutaragi also stated the Sony wanted to "avoid a situation where some systems have the drive and others don't", so hopefully we'll all have a yummy upgradeable 60 Gb HDD when the PS3 drops as well. As far as the Revolution, I'll still get one- "N" hasn't wronged me enough to miss those 10-15 stellar titles that are pretty much guarenteed for everyone of their platforms(and that isn't counting the ones that are just considered "very good"). And they'll probably at least be in 480p and I'm playin them that way now, so I can do it for a few more years as well- if the gameplay is as innovative as they say...

With 1 million units per month let's hope they don't stretch themselves too thin. Yes it's more units per month than ever before but remember they're concentrating on three continents at the same time now. I expect a launch no better or worse than the 360 launch. I'm still pre-ordering ASAP at my local gamestop! As for The Big N, their new system will definatley have a place in my home!

I find it kind of hard to believe Sony will be able to make 1 million PS3s per month. There is always a big learning curve with new consoles. Look at the growing pains M$ went thru (and still going thru) with 360 production. If Sony can have 6 million PS3s shipped worldwide from Nov thru Dec this year, that would be a monumental achievement.
