So been playing a bunch. Have accustomed myself to the controls and doing much better. Learned to Ki pulse and living water helps a lot. Played the first few levels and sub missions a few times to learn all the different weapon classes and also to increase the familiarity so that I could pass the inherited traits on.

Find myself using low stance or high stance a lot but rarely mid stance. Low is so quick especially with my kursiyaga (or whatever the sickle and chain is called) and high is so powerful. Don't care much for the axes as they are just too slow. Am loving the bull and the healing, that has allowed me to use my kodama blessing on Amrita instead of elixirs.

I never leave mid stance; it's the only one I use at all. Though that's because I'm a tank character, I can't imagine it being useful for any other type of build.

Might have to play this tonight. Never got out of the prison intro stage. Seemed fun, albeit a little too easy for this style of game. See what From Software has done?

And with Ghost Recon Wildlands coming out tomorrow, I think this is going to take a backseat

The london prison stage isn't very much like the real game. Just a little teaser intro. No ki pulse, doesn't incorporate the three different stances and move sets etc. There is a ton of nuance and main gameplay missing. Once you get out of the prison stage you go to a training dojo get just a couple of intro tutorials like 5 min worth then you get a training level of the real game. The training level when you enter feudal Zipango (Japan) is the first real taste of the game proper. After that you go to the hub and start getting missions. From taught them well but I think you'll like this game better. Much faster pace of play and more strategic fights. You probably will still rape the eye sockets of the bosses but I think you'll find this game more to your liking once you see what the main gameplay is like - much more ninja gaiden flavor.

bump...
So not sure why this game isn't getting more love but it just continues to get better and better. Now that I am deeper into the game the nuances and things that set it apart from souls continues to stand out. Elemental weapons for and against you are becoming important and the combining of one after another to introduce synergy is done well. Also the ninja and onyo magic (mainly buffs) are well done.
In the soul game I used weapons, magic and elixirs and not a lot of other stuff in battle. In this game I have 8 quick inventory slots, 2 quick melee slots and two quick ranged slots and often wish I had more I actually use grenades, buffs, debuffs, shurikens/kayani etc. On top of that more than a dozen guardian spirits to choose from with different bonuses and chargeable super powers
At first I wasn't sure about the hub and mission format vs open world but it makes a lot of sense in this game and the lore and storytelling while very Japanese is so much more cohesive than souls games. Couple that with the fact it is probably 3 times faster than souls and about twice as fast as bloodborne and you really have something. A lot of the time I have a hard time believing it is a console game.

5, I had been using the bull exclusively earlier on but I have been experimenting a bit with some other guardian spirits since I have armor that gives a small health boost with Amrita gain and also some guardians give a large(er) bonus with close combat kills and/or final blow kills. Also now that I have passed and opened up the Hidden Teahouse I have joined a Clan (Date) and been doing some revenant fights. Initially I had been doing them for the exotic gear but now for the glory so I can exchange glory points for new gear.
Also the twilight missions are fun.
One question though even though I have unlocked some smithing texts with Tomei I can't seem to find some of the ingredients needed- I have been re-doing some sub missions where I thought The enemies might have what I need but nothing - are you having a hard time finding some crafting ingredients? Do you have to replay earlier missions. I now replaying earlier missions can get you illustrations and additional lore descriptors or prestige points but wasn't sure if needed for forging. Anyhow 5, let me know where you are. I am in the middle of the 4th "region"

I dunno that I'd agree with "game isn't getting more love" because it seems to me like a ton of people are really into it. All of the gamers in my local DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) chapter are talking about it and when I went to a DSA meeting in NYC last week people were discussing it there sd erll. I also hear a lot about it at school. So socialists and students are into it, at the very least.

I didn't play at all last week or a few days before because I was on my honeymoon, so I'm just at the start of the 3rd region. Btw I re-specced into a Dual Sword Ninjustu/Magic build and I'm really liking this playstyle now.

Dual swords is probably most of my time - now that I am later in the game there are more simultaneous multi-enemy fights. Dual swords for them and the kusurigama for the large Yokai. I have invested fairly heavy in ninjitsu. I almost wish you could add or unlock a 3rd set of 4 shortcuts as I use my inventory stuff much more than I ever did in DS.
FWIW it does seem sold out a lot of places but in my gaming circles nobody other than you seems to be playing. Although a couple bosses have been tough I have not summoned anybody yet. Actually, the Hattori Honza sub mission where you have to fight him in a field in world 1 gave me trouble - I had to come back to it.

Hope you and your wife had a good time on your honeymoon. Find it hard to believe sometimes I've been married for nearly 24 years

Are you playing offline? PS4 says you haven't been on in 3+ weeks

I just started up this game again after only playing once. Very fun, glad I bought it

Now that I have a TV that works I'm going to upgrade to a PS4 pro. I'll add this to the list of PS4 games to buy. I have the console over a year and I've played 4 games on it total.

Just did the tutorial mission which overcomplicates the fuck out of the game. What's with the stances? Two shitty stances and one normal stance. I don't get the point. And that Ki regeneration thing? one of the tutorial tests I had to do like 30 times because it wasn't working and didn't give clear instructions.

As the game progresses, the stances will differentiate themselves and skill trees unlock by stance. Essentially low is super fast with less damage and uses little ki, hi is slower with much more damage and uses more ki, mid is moderate speed , damage, and ki
.

Unlock living water asap , it gives you a ki pulse when you dodge. As you get a familiarity for each weapon you will figure out what stance is best as each stance has a different move set. It seems complicated at first but a few missions in it becomes second nature.

Shorter stance tutorial:

High stance - more damage, use on tough enemies and bosses when heavy hits needed

Mid stance - more toughness, really only useful for tank characters IMO

Low stance - more Ki, this is my default when not facing very tough foes

I didn't even learn to ki pulse until like 4 missions in. Eventually it is second nature. Becomes valuable clearing Yokai realms

I'm gonna beat the entire game in normal stance and I'm not even gonna take damage from a single boss. All with the guitar hero drum set.
