I am preparing for a phone call that I never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined.

I am getting ready to call my State senator and ask him if he sympathizes with white supremacists and Nazis like the president does.

WTF

I'm happy people like Paul Ryan, Marco Rubio and others have spoken out against the white supremacists and Trump's statements but more needs to be done imo. There are over 400 confederate monuments, statues and flags sitting proudly in the US. I'm all for teaching history, the youth of our country need to fully understand the Civil War, but showing the confederate flag in government buildings and other symbols is comparable to Germany flying a Nazi flag in Potsdamer Platz. It's an ugly part of our country's past, shouldn't be celebrated or displayed so loud and proud like it is in many parts of the south.

I'm a little ambivalent about this statue/monument issue. I just hope it doesn't come down to removing monuments and statues from historic sites like Gettysburg or other places.

I get where you're coming from but taken from another thread

Quote:
unlike in Germany, where memorials to the victims of the Holocaust are erected on the ruins of Nazi buildings as a way to teach future generations about the sins and horrors of the past, most Confederate statues were designed to glorify the sins and horrors of the past.

Professor Kirt von Daacke, co-chair of the University of Virginia President's Commission on Slavery and the University, explains that the Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville was erected in 1924 “as part of the apex of white supremacist rule in Virginia and the US. It was explicitly part of a project designed to claim public space for whites only and remind African Americans that they were the dominated whose lives were worthless.”

Both the statue of Robert E. Lee and a nearby statue of Stonewall Jackson, he continues, were installed just after the KKK marched directly into the heart of the African-American community.

“These statues,” he says, were “the final act in a 30-plus-year project in Virginia ... eliminating African Americans from citizenship and the public sphere and erasing the history of the Civil War.” He sees both of them as part of a Lost Cause mythology that itself was a whitewashing of history.

“To call these statues historical is to be willfully ignorant of history,” he adds. “The statues are monuments to white supremacy, not to Lee, not to Jackson.”

The thing about many of the civil war statues, is they weren't built or erected in the aftermath of the civil war, but rather 50-60 years later, to intimidate colored people. Many of them popped up in the 1930s and 60s.

IMAGE IS HUGE.. so warned. :P

You know the answer. Even if he does he won't admit it. He's a politician , they lie for a living.

Most of the monuments and statues on both sides were created well after the Civil War ended. Generally the Confederate monuments were created later for a couple of reasons: 1) they were much poor and didn't have a lot of money to spend on statues and 2) as losers they wanted to forget rather than memorialize. I imagine after the 50 year anniversary that Southern pride started to sink in and they they were ready to remember again. To think that the Lee statue, which took seven years to make, was created to intimidate colored people, is totally ridiculous.

That said, I do understand why Black people would feel uncomfortable or offended by them so I have no qualms having them removed, as long as they are relocated to a memorial site. But I definitely do not believe they were made with bad intentions, but rather for Southern pride and to honor their heroes.
