OT: New Phone

I'm thinking about upgrading my phone. My two year contract is about to be up and ATT is offering me this phone for free with a new two year contract http://www.motorola.com/us/consumers...ile-phones#tab

My question is, You guys are really good with this stuff and I trust your judgment. Is that phone a major upgrade to the phone I currently have http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/htc-inspire-4g-att/

If its either just a sideways move or small upgrade I don't want to get locked into another contract. I'd rather just keep my Inspire 4G if thats the case.

I wouldn't consider the Atrix a huge upgrade over the Inspire. They're both 4G phones with Jellybean right? If it was something like a Galaxy S3 or a RazRMaxx or something like that I'd say go for it, but that's a minor upgrade at best. If the phone is still working fine for you I'd say keep it till you can get something way better. If it's on it's last legs then the Atrix is an okay phone but not on the same level as the top tier phones obviously.

The Inspire is Android 2.xx, not 4.xx

You know, if you switched to US Cellular, you sign only one 24 month contract, then never again, and you are eligible for new phone upgrades every 18 months AT THE MOST, but you can cash in Belief Points (TM) for faster phone upgrades.

I signed up in April of 2011 and I got a new phone (Galaxy S3) right when it launched in Summer 2012.

Is it worth a 2 year contract to upgrade to Jelly Bean on a not much more impressive phone though John? I don't think so.

I just checked US Cellular and their coverage isn't in my area really or else I'd jump on that in a second! I believe my Inspire isn't really 4G, its a bootleg version of it. ATT said the atrix is true 4G LTE. I noticed the atrix has a dual core 1.5 Ghz processor and my inspire has single core 1Ghz. On paper that sounds great but will it show in the real world? Also, john is right, my Inspire is Gingerbread and the atrix is jellybean android os.

It's probably not a bad upgrade. What would they hit you for if you wanted to get something like the S3 or the Maxx? They have to be going MUCH cheaper these days.

I didn't even look. I just heard "upgrade" and "free" and I perked up lol. Also for some reason my monthly bill will go down a significant amount with this upgrade

Honestly, my Inspire is HTC and About a year ago they put out a firmware update that fucked up my phone. My text messaging app became soooo damn glitchy I was ready to smash my phone. I want to avoid HTC because of that, I mean after a year and thousands of complaints about it and they never got around to fix it, fuck um.

I wanted some advice before I just jumped on the upgrade and new contract. I read the spec sheet on both phones and I see the obvious things that are better but when it comes to the cpu and stuff like that I only see the numbers and don't know if its really an upgrade.

The Atrix is an older phone I thought. That and I'm not a fan of Motorola phones, their motoblur or whatever they call it is not great imo.

That said it is an upgrade over what you have but me personally, if I'm signing a new contract I'm getting the best phone I can get to make it worth while. I bet you can buy an Ateix for $200 or less right now without upgrading. I sold my GS2 and its barely going for 150 and its a better phone than the Atrix.

Depends on if you intend to switch carriers or not. If you have no intention to switch carriers, might as well upgrade your phone; it will be a lot faster and have more features.

If you stay with ATT for 2 more years, then you've given them the 2 year contract and gotten nothing extra in return. If you're going to stay, might as well sign the piece of paper and take the free stuff!

I call DirecTV every 2 years and make them upgrade all my shit... As soon as that 24 month contract is up, I'm busting their balls, threatening to leave unless I get all of the newest gear. I would NEVER leave DirecTV, but why not reap the benefits of being a "new" customer?

Yeah there's no way that old phone is 4G. They didn't even have the 4G networks up 2 years ago when you said you got the phone. I think that's when you said you got it.

Anyway, the new phone will be significantly faster, probably get a bit better battery life, and have access to a dramatically faster 4G network.

Too bad about US Cellular; their contracts really are amazing. Sign one contract, and never again, yet still get phone upgrades at the contract prices every 18 months or less.

there are three atrix models so far. The atrix 4g, atrix2 and the atrix Hd, the latter being the newest model and one being offered to me.

Think I'm going to go for it. It seems to have sparkling review's and seems pretty solid. It couldn't be worse then what I have and like john said, I don't plan on switching carriers so I might as well reap the rewards. Thanks for your help guys and I'll let you know how it goes.

I would also recommend going to a local RadioShack to see what kind of deals they're running. They sometimes have new phones cheaper than the carrier stores/online do. Plus, you can trade in your old one for credit towards your new one.

I'm actually thinking about this phone also but two things might kill it for me. One, I can't find any info if this phone takes micro SD cards and Two, the app store doesn't have most of the apps my fiancé love's (upgrading her phone also). the apps sound trivial but she's gonna be stuck with that phone for two years. I might just get her the Atrix and the Windows 8X for me. How is the battery on this thing? if you could ( I know you work for MS ) give me your honest opinion, pro's and con's of the HTC 8X.
