Color me unconvinced. This all seems very "casual" orientated. Core gaming is still, in my opinion, all about controller, graphics, and gameplay/storytelling. And my controller I mean the game controller. That's why there's 200 dollar Mice and 300 dollar gaming keyboards. But Kinect in SKyrim where you SHOUT is considered a goof.

This article is hinting at what I was saying in another thread. This is Microsoft's chance to really put DirectX in a place where NO ONE will ever touch it.
If Microsoft makes the tools and developers use them (properly), pricing would be the last little morsel of detail but can you guys imagine this: You buy a game for PC, it uses some new Microsoft DX API with multiplatform technology. For, just to use a number, $5 you can buy a mobile license. Now this game works on your tablet/smartphone if it is x86 compatible with proper hardware requirements. Say another $5 and you can now play this game on your Xbox. Microsoft getting Xbox in everyone's house is the only company that can do this right now. They have the PC install base, and now a strong console install base, but they have to make a strong mobile install base. There are a few games that I've played on my PC and my Note 2, the controls are a little different but the games are the same. These are mostly click-story games, but slowly I can see how smart control design, BT controllers, and the sort can easily make games cross the canyon. Of course, since everyone will want money I can see this going no where (fast), but the idea is a good one. They just need to garner the support. |

The Wii has been somewhat dead the last 2 years and it still has a rather large lead because of the casual crowd. There is just not as much money in core gaming as there used to be. Games cost too much to make these days and require too many copies to be sold to make a profit. Look at the closures we have had of late from core gaming devs.

Then I guess in the next 5 years I won't be a gamer anymore? I don't know what else to say. I hope there will always be core games and pc parts, but maybe it's a dying industry. 35mm and Kodachrome went away, perhaps too will the desktop computer.

Traditional games aren't dying, they're sort of evolving beyond a KB+M or living room setting.
I have one of these: http://www.powera.com/moga ![]() And I'm telling you, right now it is fucking cool. I'm currently only playing emulators, but can you imagine with Windows 8 if full PC games can scale to Smartphones/Tablets? The hardware is getting there, I came across this game (didn't even know about it until I read the new iPad4 review):
Clearly the hardware can support more than just Angry Birds and the junk. Devs just need the motivation to make decent multiplatform games, and I feel Microsoft is in a great position to actually do it (and in the process solidify Direct X as the GO-TO API for game development.) |

I don't mind the casual aspects of most games but I have my limits...
