Who's the most bad ass Protaganist?

I was thinking about this while talking to a friend before. Who is the most bad ass protagonist in YOUR opinion in a video game, ever.


I think my vote has to go to Geralt of Rivia. Sure he's not immortal. But he has died and come back. He carries TWO swords. One for mortals, and a special silver sword to ONLY be used on monsters. Plus he knows Alchemy and a special sign language that can cast magical spells. And he fucks, a lot.

My runner up. Kratos. Because well.. fuck he's Kratos.

I like Geralt because of his lack of any kind of morality. He's just this kinda grumpy master swordsman who is annoyed by the world.

Most badass? A few names I'd throw out would include:

-Ryu Hyabusa - simple fact that he's a badass ninja who kills thousands of people and doesn't even think twice about it.
-Riddick - Just all around awesome. Badass killer, smart, hilarious, and its Vin Deisel.
-Duke Nukem - this is kind of cheating because he was designed to be the ultimate exaggerated badass
-Kratos - as you mentioned, this is an obvious choice
-Gordon Freeman - Mess with this guy, you die. Simple. No words ever exchanged, only death.

He'd kill Kratos before he knew he was dead.

Kratos, especially in GoW3. How many video games have a protagonist that gouges out eyes, rips off fingernails, rips heads off with his bare hands, smashes heads repeatedly until they're a bloody pulp, rips warriors in half, disembowels horses, slices up innocent civilians, kills Gods, and ultimately destroys the world? No one.

Runner-up I guess would be James Earl Cash, but he doesn't even come close to Kratos. He is a badass though.

OK, my serious answer is basically this:

Kratos is the "clear obvious choice" but if I just choose one I choose Geralt.

My primary reason for Geralt over Kratos is based on one key factor:

Geralt has mastered of the art of waiting "till he drops his fucking guard!" That's some bad-assery right there.

Yea outside of Sam Fish and Ryu Hyabusa I dont see how anyone else can be considered. Sam Fisher is a cold blooded dude and goes one vs a thousand and still comes out ahead. Ryu, well the dude fights monsters and other bad ass Ninjas and shreds them up like it was a warm up.

Kratos would tear through both of them and Geralt on his way to taking down a god though. His Vengeance knows no bounds and if Cronos and Zeus could not stop him, I dont think anyone can...

Is Kratos really a "protagonist" though? He's more of a... leading murderer. And there's no subtlety. He's all "AHHH GOUGE OUT YOUR EYES MY FAMILIES ASHES ARE UPON ME" At least Ryu fights with some Pizazz and runs up walls and shit. And yeah Sam Fisher is totally bad ass. But in his most recent incarnation he's just a call of duty special forces guy now. Not the amazing super spy he was.
