This is not all gameplay, and even some of what they are showing as it seems a little suspect, but it's interesting to me how much this is not what I expected from FC3:
Everything looks ok, and the gun-play looks right, but then I see several linear set-piece COD looking levels going on... in a Far Cry game... That's not right. ![]() I expected this game to be a giant open world with no scripting, and I thought they'd go crazy with physics this time. I expected a lot more fire stuff, maybe some water stuff or something. This just looks like a gritty military FPS... Not that it's a bad thing mind you; still looks cool, just not at all what I was expecting...

There was a video somewhere in here (in the PSN thread) that showed clips from this video along with developer commentary, and I strictly did NOT get the impression that this game was a linear shooter. Most likely what we are seeing is some more scripted missions, as were present in the other game.
Here's another thing; notice the map/compass in the corner of the screen? No linear FPS in the history of the world has had one of those. In fact, only 3rd person sandbox games have. I really wouldn't worry too much about that.

I think it's the ziplines. Seeing ziplines makes me nervous.

Looks good to me! It did seem a bit linear, but it's probably just the mission as Rambo stated. I haven't played any Far Cry games before, but I did pick up 1 and 2 during the Christmas Steam sale. I'll have to get around to playing them soon.

I love long games. I wish every game was a minimum of 15 hours long. These 6 hour FPS romps like Call of Duty are a crime against humanity.

If they had changed the dynamics of the game, I would be in complete agreement with you. But they didn't. It was the exact same game with the exact same missions with the exact same enemies. On another map. There wasn't any real motivation to keep going. I did, but it just wasn't as interesting anymore.

Far Cry 2 was a game that really depended on the player getting creative with it. Its really what you make of it. You end up hitting the three or four dozen guard outposts what, like 100 times throughout the game? You have to get creative with the way you approach those things, otherwise it just get's annoying if you're just buzzing through them in a truck every time. There is so much driving time involved in FC2 that if you don't take the time to have fun with the guard checkpoints, the game is just too much travel and too little action. But then the guard checkpoints are overly repetitive and can't get annoying. I loved every aspect of the game, but I know it wasn't a perfect design. There were many ways it could have been better, but I have a tough time pointing out exactly what. I know the respawing guard checkpoints were annoying, but I wouldn't want them to be removed. I dunno. Hopefully Ubi Montreal has more ideas than I do for FC3
