Default OT - Checked My ratemyprofessors.com Rating

Since Fall semester is starting up soon, I decided to go see what my students score me at ratemyprofessors.com...

Hopefully the pepper is how spicy hot he is and not a representation of his 'educational assets'

What do you teach? It seems the subjects can play a role, as more challenging subjects seem to result in students rating Profs lower. I used to use RMP, I guess I was lucky, I always rated my profs consistently high.

Mathematics (occasionally physics).

And it's out of 5 points, not 10, kamspy!

The red pepper means that students think I'm hot. Since the site is run by MTV of course there has to be some kind of stupid gimmick like that.

I taught a class at a juco once. More work than I expected. 4 year college profs got it easy since TAs do most of the grunt work.

While the TA's are doing the "grunt work" the professors are ultra busy doing research/trying to get published...

Right and thats the problem with the college education system IMHO, profs focus more on research/publishing books instead of teaching. Many of my math profs could barely speak english and were impossible to understand. I think the best profs I had were for upper econ and IT courses. The math profs were pretty bad.

Guess we should all start scanning in letters we've received from clients on how good our work is and start posting them?

That said, I had a computer professor by the name of Fahdi Dihck or something like that, an indian guy. I'm a good hardware guy, but this was a Visual Basic course or something, I didn't understand a SINGLE word this guy said. Then I'm like... okay I'll just go to the extra courses with the TA... couldn't understand him either. Then my physics professor, a class I was ACTUALLY good at was a german dude who ALSO DIDN'T SPEAK ENGLISH WTF!!!

This was at NJIT and I had a partial scholarship. I dropped out after the first year and went to work in my family business, I couldn't take it. I'm no dunce, but I definitely should have not gone for the school that would pay me the most and actually done some research. Oh well, I think I make more money than most of my college graduate friends at this point with the economy.

+1

I didn't even have a math professor. All math was taught by Russian TA's. But at least I could understand them for the most. I had an economics TA from Bangladesh that was so bad, everyone got a passing grade because no one could understand her.

It has been a good long while since I graduated college- back in the days of BBS and telnet instead of internet and computer classes were basic, cobol , & pascal - oh the memories. I was at the "U" in Miami and the only prof or TA that I couldn't understand was a cellular biology lab TA. I highly doubt that is the case in Miami, Fl these days. Congrats to you 2+2 - good to see your students value you and your knowledge. Doesn't seem like the 'publish or perish ' mentality has changed any though.

I agree. They should NOT be forcing professors to "publish or perish", since they are supposed to be their to TEACH not publish. People pay for the teachers not the TAs.
