Default PS2/HDTV Question

I currently have a PS2 connected with component video cables to an SD Sony Wega TV. I am planning to upgrading to HDTV (likely to a Sony 30 or 34" HS series or Panasonic 30 or 34" X15 series. Leaning toward Sony.) I'm wondering whether the PS2 will be compatible with the new set, i.e. will the games display in high-def. Also plan to go with the PS3 when available.

Tnx very much.

Many PS2 games struggle with standard def. Many of them, such as Gran turismo 4 only display at 640x480, so look poor on anything other than an SD TV.

The platform is many, many years old now so don't knock it. PS3 and indeed Xbox 360 should look awesome on HDTV, but i'm curious to see whether it truly is as good as my PC... (Amd x2 4400, nvidia 7800gtx).

By the way, the PS2 will show an image, just not a great one.

Yes, it will be compatible. Many newer PS2 games are progressive scan which requires an HDTV to view anyway.

I think my PS2 looks pretty damn good on my HD Sony. God of War looks absolutely fantastic in progressive mode. And GT4 will display in 1080i on the PS2, you have to be connected via component cable and then select it in the menu options. The jaggies are still there because its interlaced, but the detail level is pretty awesome. Some minor slowdown sets in from time to time if your in tight combat with 4+ cars though. I believe GT4 has ultimately maxxed out the PS2...

Depending on the scaler in your TV, SD games have the potential to look very bad on an HDTV. Sonys happen to have excellent scalers and do quite an impressive job with SD content. I've heard Toshibas do very well also.

It will definately be fun to see the PS3's and X360 on the HiDef sets.

I'll have to agree- the PS2 does look pretty damned nice in progressive. You gotta remember though, this is comin' from a guy who never owned a TV with S-video until now, so the difference to me is absolutely stellar. I just borrowed God of War and GT4 from a buddy, and they are truly impressive. GT4 is gettin close to photorealism and GoW is some of the best presentation I've seen in a game. I just finished PoP:Warrior Within(saved the last half of the game until I could really enjoy looking at it- lol) and found on it and certain other games that I'm better off switching my input back to 540p instead of 1080i simply for a better framerate(some games it really isn't that noticable). You will not bedisappointed with gameboxes and component cables for each, trust me. I think my next project is going to be installing the old wireless adaptor and taking the PC downstairs to output Guild Wars onto my new baby... *toothy grin*

As a professional installer and game user, i do suggest going with HD. I play all the big named games and really enjoy it more now then i did in SD. Its worth it.

Well, keep in mind, PS2 isn't that capable of sending out an HD signal (480p is enhanced def).

My guess, you might get a slight "delay" since the TV is taking a 480i/p signal and converting it to it's native resolution (720p). This includes the fact you are still taking 640x480 (interlaced or progressive) and changing it to 1280x720 without adding any detail (which, I believe is also the reason why standard def channels sometimes look worse).

With the upcoming Xbox 360, Microsoft has made the support of (at least) 720p mandatory, so expect some beautiful, crisp games on your set...that is of course, if you get an Xbox 360.
