I dont think so, Microsoft has a patent on this I believe which prevents Sony from incorporating it into their console.. Someone might want to chime in just in case I missed something.

Only on games that support a custom soundtrack, unfortunately. Microsoft owns the patent on hardware-based custom soundtracks.

I can't find any recent lists on a google search but I know Killzone 2 online, Super Stardust HD, and High Velocity Bowling support custom soundtracks.

Interesting I didn't know KZ2 supported custom soundtracks. The only game I've used custom sound tracks on is Wipeout HD.

Yep, KZ2 does but *only* in online mode. Burnout: Paradise also supports custom music.

On that note: WipeOutHD did custom music right ... and I mean it did it right! The music wasn't just statically playing in the background, it had effects like echo applied to the music depending on what was going on in game. I was really impressed by that.

As to why Sony hasn't done so it is because of a patent. Sony's only way around that was to make it an option for developers to use, but unfortunately many developers have (once again) not stepped up.

I never understood custom soundtracks in games. Maybe racing games? I mean the orchestral score in a game is one of the best features generally. I'm not sure i'm qualified to put my own spin on that.

I used to do it the D.I.Y way and turned on my stereo while I played Halo 2. I dunno... custom soundtracks are important to me for games that can start feeling stale/monotonous like racing games and FPS.

The only problem with custom soundtracks and FPS now is that hearing the other players movements is very important so you can't just crank music or your stats will suffer.
