Default PSN subscriptions for 2010

Subscription to Psn? What say you

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6240938...dlines;title;1

One the biggest selling points of the PlayStation 3 is that gamers can use the console to play online at no additional charge. However, evidence has surfaced that the company is planning a two-tiered subscription model for the PlayStation Network similar to--but also fundamentally different from--Xbox Live.

Sony is mulling a premium version of PSN.
Slides accompanying a Thursday presentation by Sony show that the company is planning a "new revenue stream from subscription" on PSN in 2010. [UPDATE] During the presentation, which emphasized Sony's plans to make its game business profitable in the next fiscal year, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai confirmed the plans. "We will be building upon our current free [PSN] service offering with premium content and services to start the subscription model," he told attendees.

Perhaps to assuage PS3 owners' fears that they would soon have to pay to play online, Hirai issued a subsequent statement indicating the present level of service would remain gratis.

"SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral, and PlayStation Network," Hirai said in a statement given to British outlets such as CVG. "Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services." (Emphasis added.)

As of press time, US Sony reps had not offered Hirai's statement or further clarification about its subscription plans for the PlayStation Network. Luckily, though, the "current free services" currently offered on PSN include online play, Facebook integration, and Netflix video streaming. On Xbox Live, both of those features are only accessible at the Gold membership level, which costs at least $50 per year.

[UPDATE] Even without subscriptions, PSN revenue is on the rise. For the current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2010, Sony expects ¥50 billion ($563 million) in earnings from the service, a threefold increase from the year prior. In addition to game-related content, the PSN's retail component--the PlayStation Store--offers video offerings such as television shows and movies for both rental and sale.

Read the article dude, they're not saying you'll have to pay to play but they will offer a *premium paid tier* of service which is perfectly plausible and palatable. You'll still be able to use all the current features and stuff for free (which is good for me!)

Now the real question is what are the services and goodies that come with the premium tier? Who want's to bet it will include cross game chat

I agree that is what it sounds like to me also. Maybe at some future point they will only have a pay service but for now it looks like it will be a premium service added on to keeping the free play online level we have now.

As far as chatter, i wish I could shut it off even in a game I am playing never mind listening to the infantile rambling I already have to listen to.

I want text chat to return to online games. I loved that on my DC. The "rah rah" ramblings on XBL irritate the hell out of me (and no doubt would on PSN too, I've never actually played anything online on PSN other than Rock Band).

How are you supposed to play games like MAG or other FPS objective based games?

Voice chat is critical for those who play objective based game modes, or even co-op games like Left 4 Dead, Borderlands ect ect... On the 360 its easy to stop the chatter, I can select to only be able hear and talk to people who are on my friends list... That has saved me from hating MW2 to be honest..

Those were fine by early 2000 standards, but pale in comparison to voice chat.. I am sure you wont get far in MAG, COD, BF and the likes using text...

i have to agree I only play borderlands with friends but Voice chat is critical to it. I have a few friends that hate the open mic concept so don't use it and looking for them to type something is annoying as fuck. SOOO late 90's. You have something to say, say it. i don't want to type to you while playing a game. IM's and shit is fine, but not while we're under fire.

Early 2000 standards? You mean 50v50 Unreal matches? Shit worked pretty good.

I've you're playing 6v6 CODz with strangers and say something, most likely 4 of your team won't hear you. If you can type something that comes up on the screen, most likely everyone will read it.

maybe I'm old. I can open up the chat prompt and bang out out a few sentences while reloading.

I know in L4D chat can be more useful than mics.

Facebook integration? What, no that is accessing it from a web browser. Not exactly integrated. I wonder what the premium junk is gonna be. Well, whatever it is I'll buy it like a loyal SDF member is supposed to.

You arent seriously telling me that text vs voice, that text wins?

You are using too general of a what if scenario, PC text is heads and shoulders better than consoles, but even then its still behind voice.. I have played Left 4 Dead using text and I was extremely happy when I finally got a usb mic.. It makes the games easier to communicate, oh shit a smoker has me, oh wait let me hit the space bar and type out fast while possible making typos so my team is like wtf!!!!! Voice > text

Why haven't I been hearing the people chatting on MW2 like I do on COD4? I do not recall hearing anyone which is good, since 2/3 of the people on your own team just either play annoying music too loud or make irritating noises that distract their own teammates so I am glad I don't hear anything.

Does the actual voice volume work in this version (unlike COD4) since I have it at the lowest level/off? I wish you could simply permanently mute someone and have it remember to never allow their noise to be heard unless you un-mute them. I always ended up dying when I had to mute them every time once the current game/map started, and there was no way to mute them while waiting in the current game lobby for the countdown for the game to start.

PFC: You can mute individual players in the game lobby by hitting X on their PSN ID and selecting 'Toggle Mute' in the pop up menu.

Mase: KBM and voice is my favorite. I use both when I play L4D2 and COD4 on PC.

and if I was stuck with only one option I'd go with text. After years of MP gaming I still can't get use to talking to my monitor.
