And Left 4 Dead 2... that game isn't funded, published, or even paid for with exclusivity by Microsoft. There's literally nothing binding the two together aside from Valve's preference of the PC and 360.

Aside from that, though, this was largely just semantics, and I found it funny that there were no PS3 games in the list that weren't Sony games. Which is actually a good thing, but still funny.

They are Sony-funded projects.

Same thing happens with Nintendo. Take Smash Bros. Brawl, for example, the game was not actually developed by Nintendo, but rather a company called Sora. Nintendo funded the game, however...

A lot of development actually happens like this where a larger company merely funds the game development.

That said, however, Naughty Dog, Zipper Interactive, and Guerrilla Games are all subsidiary companies of Sony. Insomniac and Sucker Punch are paid contractors I believe.

I think in the name of stuff, these are considered 2nd party titles.

In all my years of reading and what not I've come to accept these as the terms, if anyone disagrees feel free to correct:

1st party - IP owned and published by the console maker and made internally by a owned console maker dev team. Examples: Metroid Prime, Motorstorm 2, and Halo 1/2/3.
2nd party - IP owned and published by the console maker but made externally by a third party dev team (contracted.) Examples: Metroid M (or whatever its called, the first Metroid being worked on by Team Ninja), Motorstorm 1 (before Sony bought the dev team), Halo 3: ODST
3rd party - IP owned by third party entity, dev team and publisher are irrelevant (as they'd contract whoever they want.)

Those are my understands. My question on Uncharted - who owns the IP Naughty or Sony?

Reminds me of the can of beans with Goldeneye. Nintendo owns that IP, but Rare owns the content. Or something of the sort.

EDIT: A 1st and 2nd party title won't ever see the light of day on an opposing console unless contracted and royalties are paid out the ass! 3rd party can go any way.

Gears of War is a great example of a 3rd party game. Microsoft owns the major characters, but Epic still owns the universe. They can draft a new story and new characters and publish it with whomever they want.

Makes matter's worse when you realize that 343 industries only works on Halo spin-offs, and Wingnut interactive hasn't made a game yet that I'm aware of but was also created to work on a Halo game. I might be going out on a limb here but I'm gonna guess that the only ones worth anything on that list (game wise) are Rare and Turn 10 which are both awesome.

And I'm pretty sure there's more to that list, like Polyphony Digital, Team ICO, Clap Hanz, Studio London, Liverpool, and Cambridge, and a small slew of other 2nd party devs like Sucker Punch and Media Molecule.

Does Sony have more 1st and 2nd party devs than Ninty?!
