I'm just curious as to how this setup has worked out for you. We're planning on doing the very same thing - mounting a 46" LCD above the fireplace. Have you ever noticed any extreme heat put out by the TV? Our LCD just bakes through it's back-end. I mean, it gets really, REALLY hot!! If it's wall-mounted, will it also heat up the wall and maybe become a fire hazard? If you've had an experience like this, please let me know. I'd be most appreciative for your feedback.

The TV does produce a lot of heat. It all seems to go out the top via convection so the mantel does not get hot at all...even with a large fire in the fireplace. My manual says the Panny can consume around 380 watts, so that would be about the same amount of heat as keeping four 100 watt bulbs burning. Not so good for the electric bill, but probably not enough to be a fire hazard.

As for the TV and the fireplace. I built the mantel shelf 8" wide to give the TV a bit of a shield from the firebox. However, even with a large fire, the bottom of the mantel shelf is cool to the touch.

Nice clean design and install!
I see you have the same problem I do with a window opposite the TV. How does that work out for you with a plasma? I'm shopping for a new panel and am curious about how a plasma would fare during daytime viewing in a room like that.

Nice clean design. What I am curious about is where your receiver is located? I know you have your wiring running through the walls but where is receiver. I have the same set up and have been struggling / nervous to go into the wall of the fireplace.
