Default PC Review: Sanyo PLV-Z60

The Z60 is the new 720p replacement for the venerable Z5.

Absolutely the best graphical representation of projector placement with lens shif that I have seen to date! I think it could still be a little bit more clear on the graphic - or maybe something that could be clicked on for a bigger, more specific view, but this does beat all and makes it very clear how much range there is.

I think this is the best inexpensive 720p projector for a light controlled room. With a 3 year warranty and available under $800 new, it looks great. I am very suspect of durability of these LCD projectors having had a couple with serious problems after relatively light use. I don't know whether this one uses organic panels or not and I would prefer inorganic panels based on everything I have read. In a room with ambient light, the Panasonic PT-AX200U is probably much better as it is much brighter.

I saw the Z5 in action vs the Panny ax200u and chose the Panny PT-AX200u IMO hands down the king of 720p projectors especially if you are a gamer or will have up to moderate ambient lighting

The Panasonic PT-AX200U is really good in a room with ambient light, but I believe I would prefer the Sanyo PLV-Z60 in a dark room especially since it comes with a 3-year warranty. The PLV-Z60 beats the PLV-Z5 based on the reviews I have read. I was considering the PLV-Z60 when I saw the price but decided it just isn't enough of an upgrade to my PT-AE900U and PLV-Z3 and I am just going to wait and get 1080p after I decide whether I want LCD again or something else. Hopefully that will be a few years from now. We are still happy with what we have and selling one of these older modest 720p LCD projectors doesn't net much.

Well Chris, if you're going to wait a few years...my guess is that if you do choose something other than LCD, it will likely be an LCoS model offered within you're budget or the prices for the recently released DLP projectors with LED lighting have also come down in price to be within your budget.

The latter would be the best scenario considering that it satisfies the holy grail of front projects...a light system rated for at least 20,000 hours.

This year's CEDIA show should hopefully announce a handful of DLP w/ LED projectors.

I will have to read about the new projectors including DLP, I am opened minded about what I will get next. I was going to pick up the Pioneer clone of the JVC DLA-RS2 when it was being sold for less than $3,000 a few months ago but they all disappeard before I could get one.

Any projector with a light system rated for 20,000 hrs would instantly garner a look-see from me!!
