Default philips 42ta648bx - usb won't play avi files (just photos and music) - work around?

so i got all jealous of my friend who was playing avi files from the usb port in his new samsung flat-panel, and then i realized I had a usb port as well on my philips. i put an avi file on my usb stick and, lo and behold, the tv will only play photos or music. i guess this is due to copywrite concerns (which is stupid if it plays music).
is there a hack or work-around to this?
should i buy a dvd player with a usb connection? would this work?

dissapointed

Welcome to the forum!

The likely reason your TV does not play videos on that USB input is because there is no hardware chip to handle the decoding of the video format. I have the same thing with my 2008 model display that they added video to the 2009 models.

So no is the answer AFAIK.

actually, it doesn't even have to be a "good" one. just one that works and is cheap. and it doesn't even have to be a "dvd" player. suggestions appreciated
