Default DVI>HDMI sound with a Proscan 37"

I just bought a proscan 37" from BestBuy. I know its not videophile quality, but its a good college TV. Anyways, I am trying to hook up a computer to it to run Mediaportal on the TV. I got the DVI>HDMI convert and an HDMI cable from monoprice. The video looks great, but I can't figure out how to get sound through the tv's speakers.
Can anyone help me?

Don't knock it just because you bought third tier goods. It's your budget, your choice. There are sometimes reasons to consider 3rd tier, like better VGA support.

This is more of a HTPC question than general flat screen question. The SHORT of it is someone like me would have to know
1) What model TV
2) What computer & video card.

DVI "generally" doesn't support audio. There are a handful of exceptions but ALL require a propriority adapter that come with the video card and won't work on a standard DVI-D to HDMI cable.

You need a separate audio cable to your TV. You can opt for PC Input which is the 1/8th inch (3.5mm) jack at both ends, 1/8th inch to stereo RCA. Both are analog connections. The other option would be SPDIF or coax digital. The question is can you set an alternative audio source on that set. What you absolutly need depends on what PC you have, and which model TV you have.

I left out that I was using 1/8" jack to RCA plug adapter and trying to use the auxiliary input, or what I thought was the auxiliary input, but no sound would come through. The model number is 37LC30S60. It says in the instruction manual that: "If your external device has DVI only, you should use a DVI-to-HDMI cable (or adapter) for the connection and the "R-AUDIO-L" terminal on the DVI for sound output." I plugged the RCA cord into the spot that is labeled "R-AUDIO-L" but it also has "OUT" right next to those same plugs. The people at Best Buy said that i should be able to get it to accept the RCA plug sound.

The video card is a NVidia 7300GS

Okay, now I'll be critical of you buying a tier 3 tv. Cryptic URL to the website.

The manual is pretty useless. It says only "If your external device is DVI only, use R-Audio-L teriminal for sound output".

Man how cryptic. Presuming you get audio out on that jack, as in if you plug in headphones or PC speakers and get sound, that part should be working. Once you've verified sound, then try connecting to the audio input jack, not the output jack. The first one I'd try would be the ones on the side, followed by comp1 and comp2.

At each attempt, search the menu for an audio option. But I'm guessing the proscan might be smart and detect NO audio over the HDMI and default to one of the analog ports.

Alternatively speaking there could be coaxial support on your sound card, but without knowing which PC you have I can't say this for a fact. But at this point I'm thinking you read the manual, and jacked PC audio output into the tv's output, and thus wouldn't get sound, that's not an input. Understandable error given what the manual says.
