Default Panasonic Plasma - DVD Playback Issue

Hi and Hello,

I just purchased a Panasonic Viera G10 50" plasma TV. After hooking everything up it turned out the TV has an issue playing some DVDs.

I have both NTSC and PAL DVDs, and two different DVD players both by Panasonic.
One 1080i and the other an upscaling 1080p.

When either of the players is connected to my 32" LCD via HDMI all DVDs play just fine, yet when connected to the plasma (also HDMI) I get a black screen.

I'm starting to think this is an upscaling issue.
So far I've tried setting the DVD players at 1080i and 1080p, after reading some other similar posts I'm thinking about disabling upscaling on the DVD player all together if it is possible.

Any help will be appreciated.

I presume that you already tried flipping through the different inputs on the TV?

Indeed. I've tried changing Inputs, Cables as well as DVD players.

P.S. I need to have this connected via HDMI due to the fact some DVDs are PAL.

Slight offtopic...
FYI - There is no collision course... Nibiru (if it exists) crosses the solar system near the asteroid belt, which is located between Mars and Jupiter.

Try that. It could be compatibility issues with the TV's up/down scaling vs the DVD Player's. That is a little weird, you could have a bum TV

I seriously doubt the TV is defective. Like I mentioned other DVDs play just fine.

Make sure that the TV is turned on first and set to the HDMI input the player is connected to BEFORE turning on the player. It sounds like a HDCP handshake issue.

I would probably just send out 480p on SD DVDs since your display will do a very good job upscaling it to the native resolution (1920x1080p) of the display.

Hope this helps!

panansonic is usally pretty good at customer service, since you just bought the tv, they would probably send someone out to make sure everything is working properly. give them a call, the sooner, the better.

Ok here's the scoop...

Talked to Panasonic Support, they claim it's my LCD that is not working correctly. Supposedly even when using HDMI my PAL DVDs shouldn't work and some of my DVDs are PAL.
They claim that they are strictly bound to the standards and evidently my LCD manufacturer isn't.

P.S. Somehow the fact that Olevia doesn't follow standards that closely truly works for me...

Technically, that's correct. A TV in USA (NTSC) does not have to support anything PAL. The fact that your Olevia TV does is a good thing, but not a required thing. That's the "standards" they are talking about.

With that aside, it's your DVD player's job to decide if it supports NTSC or PAL, not your TV... At least that's what I thought, but I could be wrong on this one.

Regardless, a simple test to rule out HDCP handshake problems is to use component cables if possible. If it works, its a HDCP problem likely caused by the different region of the DVD vs your TV.

Exactly. So I heard mine from the tech at Panasonic about them following standards strictly and so on, but both of my DVD players are NTSC and are by Panasonic.

I asked what's up with that?

The tech stumbled a bit and then said they only deal with TVs, and if I want more info on the DVD players need to talk to the DVD department.

No matter, too bad though. I have many PAL DVDs...

So to solve the problem I decided to buy a new DVD player.

I chose the Yamaha DVD-S5950 region free DVD player, which has PAL to NTSC conversion built-in, as well as upconversion to 1080p.

I'll let you know when I receive it if it fixed my problem.

After a week and a half of waiting for the DVD Player I decided to contact the vendor and found out it wasn't even shipped, so I canceled the order.
Placed an order with another vendor, got the unit in 2 days... DEFECTIVE!!!!! god damn...

Returned the unit and had to wait another 2 weeks for a replacement.

The unit is finally in and installed, works great...
