First time HDTV buyer. Going big. We were pretty set on a Sony 52" from Best Buy model KDL-52V5100. However, we recently ran into a Sharp 52" at Wal-Mart for a solid $500 less. I fully realize that the Sony is a better television, but is it $500 dollars better. Money is a always an issue, so just some opinions would be nice. Thanks

If the Sony is a little much, look into a Toshiba. Similar performance, less money. And yes, the Sony V series will be better than the Sharp. Sharp used to be great, however, they have slipped a lot in the LCD world.
How about a plasma? You may find that you can get a 50-54" plasma for less than the LCDs. |

Get a panny 54 inch plasma for the price of SONY, better viewing angle and better blacks with no motion blurr. If you have to buy LCD than buy SONY or SAMSUNG, i would avoid sharp, it is not bargain for $500 less.

i am very happy with my 32" sharp. There is little or no difference when comparing my sharp and a sony/samsung side by side or in store. For 500 dollars, i say go for it. Just test it for banding since bigger size sharps are prone to that.

you are recommending a product and then saying look for banding, that is strange, if OP buy it online and find banding why he has to go through hassle of returning it. this is why recommended plasma because if OP is willing to compromise on quality for $500 why not get a plasma and save money and better the PQ and overall better TV.

In January I bought a Sharp 52D85U 120hz LCD. The comparable Sony 52W4100 (last year's version of the current 52V5100) was $600 more. So for a same size and similar features plus a substantial savings...du-h... Sharp it was.
40 days later, noticed some minor banding (after reading about it on boards like these), read some horror stories about folks contacting Sharp about issues and Sharp not being responsive nor helpful. Found that the "good" picture quality of the Sharp was no longer good enough, wanted the better quality of the Samsungs or Sonys. Read some more negative stuff about Sharp, so... exchanged the sucker for the Sony I was initially looking at. By then the Sony was on sale... still paid $300 more than the Sharp, but my happiness and sanity are worth it. The Sony's picture quality is definitely betterthan the Sharp's... I've been VERY happy.

If you are really looking for "the best" LCD HDTV, then that would be Samsung's B750 series! Check out the Amazon reveiws and the links provided.

You do realize that Sony purchases the glass from Fujitzu and the processors and most of the internal workings from Sharp.
Sharp has all the proprietary technology licenses and therefore distributes this technology to all the other manufacturers. |
