Default tv tuner

my dad's tuner went out on his olivia hd tv i bought him i called the company too see what was wrong and they told me tuner is shot. He had a storm and it quit working after that. He got a hd box from cable and it works thru the box but to put cable from wall to tv it will not work it says no signal. and everything is set correctly to the phone call with company. Now my questions is he really can't afford the box is there something else i can use such as a vcr that will act as a tuner i tried one of those converter boxes but it did not work

i would appreciate any help anyone has
thanks

It is likely that all the tuners are shot from the storm, as the reason you cannot run the cable company cable out of the wall to the tv, because that would need the QAM tuner for cable system sources.

How is the cable box hooked into the TV?

I ask this because your average VCR offers only composite outputs. To answer your own question, attach the cable box to the TV via the single video cable, ususally yellow, and see if that works. If yes, then you can get by with a cheap VCR and enjoy a standard def tuner.

If the TV will only accept HDMI, or component, or S-video you might go with a DVD recorder. The Philips DVDR3505 is one example you can find referbished under $100, but I don't know if it will tune in CATV over the HDMI or component. This is something you'll have to ask.
