Default Best Settings for Samsung LCD HDTV?

Our family just got a Samsung LN46B550 (ToC, 1080p, 70,000:1 DCR, 6ms).

I was wondering what the best settings might be for viewing? Gamma, brightness, backlighting, etc. etc.

Another thing I noticed about the TV that is a little annoying is that for instance, when the screen goes completely black when I'm running a blu-ray dvd, I can see a little bit of what looks like light coming in from the top and bottom of the screen just faintly. I wonder if this is normal or part of the backlighting or something?

Each TV will be a bit different and your environment affects settings also.

A good calibration may be needed.

You can get a pretty good starting point at tweaktv.com.

I would buy the BD version of DVE (DIgital Video Essentials) which you can get fairly cheap here:

Fine, if you have a BD player.

Re-read the OP first post. He/she DOES say they have a Blu-ray player already.

thanks for the tweaktv link. i've found my model except that one letter in the model number is different.

i have LN46B550, but they only show LN46A550. What is the difference between A and B? And will the settings apply the same for both?

The "A" series is last years model, and the "B" series is this years model. Many times the settings for one year do not carry over well to the next year because they change the scale sometimes. They did this between 2007 & 2008 model years for Panasonic plasmas. I am not sure if this happened with Samsung though.

Here is a picture of the annoyance on the screen I mentioned in my original post...

You can see about 1/3 in from left there is lighting come in from the top and a little bit from the bottom of the screen. It's not really noticeable when there is a bright display on screen, but when there are dark scenes it's a little noticeable and just annoying more than anything. Is this normal or a defect?

Doesn't look normal to me, I would exchange it for another.
