I guess the #1 is no surprise. The rest is to me though. Surprised to see Panny down at 4 actually. I guess I'm even more surprised to see the Samsung LED so low.

Just re-inforces my opinion that Pioneer is the best. It's too bad they are not going to keep going.

The LG LCD coming in 3rd place surprises me the most actually.

Biggest surprise to me was Toshiba's LCD performance...glad to see it! I did not expect LG to take any winnings but did not think it would do as bad as it did. I did not think Sony would have done as bad either (almost suspect in the case of black level).
The Plasmas were predictable..although no doubt most have improved incrementally. Pioneer did not have to improve to stay ahead. Kind of makes the differences between the others less significant.

I guess I showed my 'plasma' bias. I did not even consider the ratings of ALL displays collectively. In my mind I had already separated plasma from LCD. In a sense, I guess Toshiba kind of bridges that gap if you only look at the final rating.

Looked like a great show, Robert...I've only watched about 10 min of the video so far..it is a bit choppy, unfortunately.
To fully understand the 'show' I think one really has to consider the education given by those adjusting the panels. While we all like instant results and grades, the path to success in not that simplified. But in context of the technical explanations, the results would seem consistent. Have to see it myself next time.

Here's a great selection of videos from the show, they are broken down into parts. You can see the technical explanation for all the settings, how various attributes are measured, etc.
Again, the observers were being educated before sitting back and marking down their impressions.
With professionally calibrated displays and the right source and material it is not difficult to arrive at valid conclusions by observing differences. Certainly tops typical showrooms or even published reviews IMO.

If you are going by final overall score, your list is wrong.

Should be:

Pioneer Plasma 9.5
Samsung Plasma 8.1
Panasonic Plasma 7.9
Toshiba LCD 7.4
LG Plasma 7.2
Samsung LCD 7.1
LG LCD 7.1
Sony LCD 6.2

I only see 2 big surprises, how well Toshiba did, and how bad Sony did . The rest is fairly predictable.

Ok, I'm brand spankin new to the forum, but based on the things I've read on here, Panasonic Plasma was expected to be #2, right behind the Pioneer Kuro line. Did Samsung do 'something' in their current lineup to edge ahead? I know .2 in difference really might not be worth caring about, but any insight would be appreciated.

Neither Panasonic or Samsung is right behind Kuro. You are half right.
The differences are not significant between Pan & Sam, nor were they last year.
Panasonic has a little better black level, the Samsung a little better color accuracy. Comes down more to personal taste.
Many prefer Panasonic because of their stellar rep for reliability over pretty much anything else, including Pioneer.
But when it comes to performance the Kuro is the leader of the pack (still).

Now THAT list looks more like how it should be IMO, and I agree on the 2 surprises you saw as well.

Toshiba was an eye-opener for me...it seems they are really overshadowed by other brands..maybe this will help their cause, if they are in fact in that good in the LCD world.
They could do more damage to Sony....(karma?)
