What is HD?

I am in the market as a first time HDTV buyer, and realize how much the technology has changed in the last few years.
I will be sitting 10-12ft away and the tv will be a wall mount above my fireplace. We will watch probably 3/4 tv shows and sports, and 1/4 movies on this set. We will not upgrade to HD initally. We are looking for the best bang for the buck in the middle display. I am still not sure if plasma should be an option, but everyone seems to steer me towards LCD. I have two prospects, but am still unsure of a decision. Sony BRAVIA KDL-40V4150 40" or LG 42LG50 42" LCD HDTV If anyone else has a suggestion I would appreciated it. I have read some of the notes at the top, and they have been helpful. I just want to feel comfortable with this decision, and I hope you all can help. Thanks. |

Why are they steering you away from plasma? Please list some of the reasons they are giving... I have both plasma and LCD and love them both. But the over all picture quality is better with my plasma.. No question. But there are certain situations were LCD would be a better fit, just not many..
At 10-12 ft away, I would look into a 50'' display IMO.. 40''-42'' would still be nice, but a 50'' + would be a better HD fit at that distance IMO. But being mounted over a fireplace may cause the need for a smaller set. I would recommend the Panasonic TC-P50G10 50'' plasma. Great set and can be had for around $1400 shipped. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...nic-_-89187123 But if you are just asking about those 2 sets, I would go with the Sony hands down.. Even though it is 2 inches smaller.. Not a big fan of LG and their LCD displays..

I have heard image burn, and glare as the main reasons. I have also been told that unless you were going over 50" that an LCD makes more sense. This is why I am here. I have read so many articles that I wanted to hear from a real person!
I would like to stay under $1000 if possible. I know this makes it even more difficult to get quality with that budget. |

I think with a 1080p 42" TH-P42S1 or 46" TH-P46S1 series he can get just under $1,000.00 cost. Not quite as good as the G10 series, but excellent and the newer better model of what i bought last year.

Samsung - 40" Class / 1080p / 60Hz / LCD, Model: LN40B530 - $899 Samsung - 40" Class / 1080p / 60Hz / LCD, Model: LN40B550 - $934 Sony - BRAVIA / 40" Class / 1080p / 60Hz / LCD, Model: KDL-40V4100 - $799 I have the Samsung 40B550 and a Sony 52W4100... and I think these sets are pretty comparable to the above... my Sony does a much better job at displaying Standard Def than the Samsung. And the great thing is that BB has a 30 day return policy with no restocking fee. Good luck!

The 42'' can be had for rite around $1000 shipped, so that is a good option to since $1400 for the 50'' is a bit outta your range.. But at 10-12 ft, you may want to think about saving up the extra $400 for the 50'' or at least the $250 more for the 46'' Panny model.. Just a suggestion..But if $1000 is firmly your budget and LCD is you choice, I would give this set a look. It is the Toshiba 46'' 1080p LCD onsale at Tiger for $999. Toshiba makes a very fine LCD and this price is great for a 46'' set.. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...045&CatId=3650

Panasonic Viera - TC-P50X1 Sony Bravia - KDL 46V4100 Samsung - LN46A550 Thanks for urging me to look at plasma's, and thanks for steering me away from the LG. Last edited by Packowolves; 05-29-2009 at 09:27 AM. |

Those 2 LCDs are last year models compared to the current year plasma model, so the LCDs are likely selling at a significant discount from what they originally sold for and what the current models are selling for.
From your viewing distance of 10-12 feet, I doubt the higher resolution of those last year model LCDs will even be seen from where you will be viewing the display. You would have to have perfect vision and even then it would be hard IMO. I sit 8 feet away with "better than perfect vision" at 20/13 vision and the difference is not that great over the 720p my 1080p 50pz80u replaced. At 10+ feet away, I doubt even with my vision i could tell any difference. From your 10-12 feet distance, and how much I want good black levels and viewing angle I would choose the X1 myself. I am considering replacing my 47" 1080p LCD in my bedroom with a X1 for the better black levels especially when I turn out the lights,as that is where my LCD really fumbles IMO.

The Sony KDL-40V4150 is a 40-inch, LCD television. This unit is an LCD display, which is generally the best kind of flat-panel screen for viewing in brightly-lit rooms.
