I do not know why but alot of HDTV sets do not have EPG for OTA. And EPG is never listed in specs, descriptions, or HDTV reviews. I guess I got spoiled w/ epg on DTVpal/TR-40 converter box, go figure. But which HDTV set has EPG available and or the best gui EPG? I hope all you start bitching to manufactories about this, they will never add it if we do not bitch and moan. All OTA signals is suppose to have PSIP on it , so there is no reason for them not to have an EPG.

I doubt that you'll see any significant advancement in EPG since most HDTV buyers subscribe to some sort of cable service.
however, that being said, I have had 2 tvs from which I hooked up an antenna to get OTA HD. 1.) Samsung: EPG was always slow, accurate about 90% of the time, but not very user friendly 2.) Vizio: EPG is better, easy to navigate, and quicker although, I believe that the accuracy and speed are probably more dependent on the signal you are getting rather than the TV itself

I do think ALL mfg need to do more in this regard, and so don't the broadcasters.

OP is right on about this OTA issue with HDTVs lacking an EPG (channel listing of upcoming shows) using station PSIP data.
I am going out of my mind trying to find a set that has this (I just assumed they all had it as it was on my crappy digital to analog converter box, a USB HDTV dongle on my computer, and a Samsung HDTV I tried out) and a set that also has an analog RCA stereo out in the back (perhaps even rarer) and that is in my price range. The crazy thing about all of this is that if they include a headphone jack, and most do, there is already DAC in the set for an RCA stereo out. It would maybe add $1 to the whole cost. Also, since most sets display show information, that means they are already processing the PSIP data! Sony said it would only take a firmware upgrade to bring an EPG to the lower end Bravia line that is lacking the EPG. |
