Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, Vizio, LCDs would be at the top of my list, with a 32" as a 2nd HDTV.

Any thoughts on 720p vs. 1080p at this size. Does it make much difference in a 32-inch TV?

From what I understand there will not be much of a difference from 720P and 1080P on a 32' set.

I would say price to PQ the Vizio VO32LF is the best bang for your buck. Yes it is a a 1080P and like the others have stated the difference is minimal at best unless hooking up a computer but forgeting 1080P and 720P for a minute the PQ on this set is fantastic and can compete with some of the big boys, and under $600 IMHO it's a steal.

Yeah, I've been considering the VO32LF. Just not sure if there were any other contenders in that price-range.

Another contender would be the Toshiba, they put out an excellent TV as well. I still think the Vizio VO has a better overall PQ. But in the end it's your opinion that matters.

Another thing to watch out for is you may find some Samsung's, Sony etc for around similiar and in some cases cheaper than the Vizio and Toshiba. But you have to look at the model number. Both Samsung and Sony make Top, Middle or Bottom of the line models. For Samsung anything in the 5 series, ie 450, 550, 650 are they best performing sets, the a3 series, 330 for example is the low end. Sony's top of the line is the XBR series. Samsung and Sony's bottom of the line IMHO aren't as good as some the similiar priced Vizio and Toshiba's but there top of the line are fantastic but you in most cases would be more expensive and in my opinon the PQ doesn't make up for the price difference.

You just don't want to pay for an inferior set just because it has Sony or Samsung on the Bezal. That not to say they are horrible performing sets but I think the Toshiba and the Vizio are much better performers.
So that's another thing to look out for.

These are great tips. I am familiar with the Sony series (L, S, V, XBR, Z etc.) but not so much with the other brands. So it's good to know that the low-end brand name sets aren't as good as the similarly priced Vizio.

What about LG and Sharp, are there low and high-end series that are good and ones to avoid. I'm guessing, it's good to stay away from brands like Westinghouse, Olevia and other low-end brands.

This Vizio EcoHD just popped up on Walmart's site and caught my eye. Sure it's 720p, but the price, specs and the claims of energy savings make it appealing to me. Might be one to consider.
