Unhappy 3 year old HDTV just died. Now what do I do?

Re: Sharp LC-32DA5U

Here's the story. I am watching a DVD earlier today on my Sharp. At a crucial moment in the film, the screen gets a greenish tint then goes black; however; I can still hear sound.

My Wii & Xbox 360 are connected by component. My PS3 & DVD player are connected by HDMI and my satellite TV is connected by s-video. I turn on each device and get the same result for each input: sound with no picture. I turn off the TV and go back to it some time later and get the same result again: sound with no picture.

I purchased the TV in January 2006 from FutureShop (aka. Best Buy) and to save money I didn't get the extended warranty. What do I do?

1) Should I get the Sharp fixed? If so, do I call FutureShop or Sharp?

2) Or should I get a new HDTV? If I do, what do I do with the dead TV? I'd like to be environmentally friendly when disposing of the TV.

thanks,

It could be a few things like the main/video board or backlight/PS went out. Either way, since you can get a good 32'' LCD for around $500 or less, probably not gonna be worth the repair. I am not a tech expert, but that is my guess. Many places charge $50-$100 just to open the thing up. Calling Sharp and Future Shop can't hurt and is wort a try, but doubt they will do much other than recommending a repair service or new TV... Good luck to you. On the bright side, prices have come down significantly in the last 3 years on FPD's, so may be a good excuse to get a 40'' or something. I seen some great deals on 40'' 1080p sets in the $700 range going on..

This is why i always recommend getting an extended warranty on a flat panel TV. You'll end up paying a lot more now to get it fixed or to replace it then you would have paid for the EW 3 years ago.

It's probably not worth fixing - it may actually cost more to repair than just buying a new better/larger TV. There may not even be any parts available anymore. Smaller LCD TVs are pretty much throwaway TVs - when they fail you throw them away or sell it for parts, and just buy a new one. I'm sure there are places that can recycle the dead TV.

I checked my TV today and still get the sound with no picture; however; I noticed two other things about the problem. I hear a buzzing sound from the TV that definitely wasn't there when the TV was working. The second thing I noticed is that the back light is not the issue as it still functions. So I'm guessing the main board is the main culprit.

Given the possible expense of fixing the problem, I'm considering a new TV.

The current contenders are as follows:

1) Sharp LC42D65U
- I found a very good deal on this model and this is the only reason I'm considering another Sharp.
2) Samsung LN40A530
3) Panasonic TC37LZ85

Any advice on which model I should get?

I'd definitely pick the LZ85 if i were restricted to that list of brand names, but i'd also check out the new Panasonic models like the TC-L37S1 or TC-L37G1.

This thread might be of help......

Help pick a 37" 1080p: Samsung - Sharp - Panasonic

Default 3 year old HDTV just died. Now what do I do?

First, buy a 4 year warranty for the next tv.

Second, just toss out the old TV and let nature take its' course. we couldn't destroy the earth if we tried.

Dumbest statement ever. It's not about destroying the earth, it's about poisoning ourselves with toxic waste. You probably think it's ok to pour used motor oil into our drinking water, because it can't hurt the earth, right?

And people love LCDs because they're so much more "environmentally friendly" than other televisions...they forget about the mercury in the backlight.

Is the cost truly worth it for a 4 year warranty?
