Default Toshiba Plasma 42hp66 dim/snow problem

Purchased a 42" Toshiba plasma TV (42hp66) back in spring of 2006. Yesterday, all of the sudden, it got dim. you can still see the picture but it is noticably dimmer. The dim is almost like a haze over the screen and is wavey. Happens across all inputs and devices (i.e. DirecTV box, Wii, Blue-Ray) and changing the TV settings doesn't correct it. When I adjust the settings (i.e. sports/movie/standard/memory), I can see a difference in the colors but they are always dim. Anyone else ever hear of this? Toshiba said I need to bring it to a service center. Would like to know if this has a chance of being a cheap fix or if I should start shopping?

Welcome to the forum!

I would ask what they estimated repair cost and likely success is before bringing it in. This could be just a video board that is defective, or it could be the panel failing so maybe the local repair center might has seen this issue before and know the solution.

Good luck!

Repair shop says its the image control board. All-in $440 to repair. Ouch... Tough call as its just under 50% of the cost of a similar unit new.

I think you can get a 42" Panasonic plasma for about $800.00 online so in that instance it is over 50% to repair it and you would get a better display in the newer one also.
