I have a direct HDMI to HDMI from laptop (Sony Vaio AR21S) to tv (Toshiba 37XV555DB). I have picture but no sound :-(
Rang Toshiba, they checked I had it set to receive sound via HDMI, said I had and that problem was with computer. Have checked all the setting and looked at other posts on this issue. Some of the settings I don't have. Rang sony, they suggested an unisnstall of sound drivers and reinstalled, did that, still doesn't work. Looked at other posts on subject and followed instructions but doesnt work. Example when I right click on the speak I don't get "Playback Devices" I get open volume or adjust audio properties. If I select audio properties I get windows box with Volume, Sounds, Audio, Voice, Hardware tabs and nothing in any of them related to HDMI or anything like my TV device. The audio device is "Sigma Tel Audio" unless I plug in my Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Go and that comes up. In control panel I have this "Sound Reality Audio" panel. It has settings for enabling HDMI output which is selected. I've checked all settings with a sony website, it still doesn't work but the site does confirm that the AR-Series definitely supports video and audio through HDMI. I'ved tried running several things with noise, IntervideoWinDVD with DVD's inserted, Windows Media player for mp3 tunes and movies (in avi format with codecs installed) and movies and music through media player classic (in avi format with codecs installed). Nothing gives me sound through the TV :-( Can someone please help? P.S. Don't know if it's needed by it's an NVidia Geforce Go 7600 graphics card in laptop and it has media centre edition 2005, blu-ray disc drive. Thanks in advance. |

to fix this you need to do the following:
right click volume on system tray and select playback devices select hdmi/ sdip as default and then in the properties deselect dolby on tv enter menu got to setup and to av connection select pc/hdmi1 audio to hdmi1 then turn lip sync off!!!(i think this is the key. I did all the rest before hand and then upon turning off lip sync the sound magically started working) Think this is a prob between vaio's and toshiba hope this fixes the problem |

Thanks peachy but I do not have those settings.
Already tried having searched the forum before posting. Those settings were mentioned few posts but don't work for my computer. Here's what I typed regarding those settings:Looked at other posts on subject and followed instructions but doesnt work. Example when I right click on the speaker I don't get "Playback Devices" I get open volume or adjust audio properties. None of the settings you describe are on my computer, i.e. deselect lipsinc, it's not in any of the audio settings. All settings on the Toshiba are correct, I rang Toshiba when it didn't work and they talked me through the correct settings. Looks like no sound via HDMI for me. Frustrating as H£ll because it says clearly in laptop spec that you can and according to TV you can but yet I can't.

Yeah I spoke to Sony, their solution was to uninstall and reinstall the sound device. Which I did.
![]() Although something seemed odd to me, in control panel under sound devices it lists codecs which I thought were some form of software rather than a physical device? I can't see an actual device anywhere, have selected show hidden devices. Is it per chance part of the motherboard or something? Either way, their solution didn't work, uninstalled and reinstalled, no difference. At the moment I have sound plugged into el-cheapo speakers that use a headphone jack connection plugged into laptop headphone jack. Only way can get sound. It's a mess of cables though and frustrating that can't get sound from teh tv. |

Are you using the Sony video and audio drivers? Drivers from places like laptopvideotogo don't always work the best. Also, have you disabled the laptop speakers? I read a few things on the 'net that said you have to disable the laptop speakers to get audio out of HDMI - I imagine that means the headphone and onboard speakers.

I've not installed any other drivers except what came with the machine so have to assume it Sony. It is SigmaTel Audio. Wouldn't know how to begin installing different drivers, beyond my capabilities I'm afraid.
Tried disabling laptop speakers but there doesn't seem to be anywhere to do that. Lot of the postings on this subject appear to be with completely different menu systems, the right click on speaker icon being an example. Double checked tv as well and it's definitely set to lip-sync off. I'm completely bamboozled!

ok it,sound like u dont have the hi def audio drivers installed, firstly do you have xp or vista installed? if it is xp go here:
support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downloads/info/info.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&url=Vaio/Original/AR2_Drivers.zip&ip=RAID_AR21.htm and download the driver package. extract and go to audio section and then to high def audio folder and run the kb835221. then go back to the audio and run the setup to install the audio drivers. now hopefully after the installation has run you should have hi def sound drivers and then you should be able to access the playback devices menu from the system tray. if its vista then let me know and shall try and update you on how to put on hi def audio drivers. |

![]() Followed your instructions and bingo, I've got sound through the TV ![]() I downloaded the driver pack from the link, intalled the kb hotfix file then went back into audio folder and ran other drivers. Now I've got beautiful stereo sound from my tv and I can get rid of the piles of wires and speakers I've got coming out my laptop! Thanks so much and thanks for patience explaining to me coz I'm a real novice with this stuff. |

Hello, I have a Sony Vaio VGX-301 media center and i just recently bought a Panasonic Viera 42" HD Ready to. But when i connect them together with an HDMI cable i have perfect picture but no sound. I have been scratching my head for a couple of weeks now. I have read up and down, countless times through forums, contacted both Sony and Panasonic but still can't get sound. I have even went to the extreme of doing a system restore on the pc. I have done all the updates from Windows, and all the updates from sony. But still have the same problem. Im running windows vista 32-bit. I haven't used any other driver sources, only sony. If any one has had the same issue, or if anyone knows how to solve this i would be extremely greatful. Hope to hear from some one soon or i may not have any hair left. Thanks
p.s the sony vaio is about 2 years old if that is any extra help thewizard86 |

Not sure but I suspect that you will find that the HTiB sound system you bought only has video "Passthrough" on the HDMI inputs. You will likely have to run an optical to get 5.1/7.1 sound with it. Look for the word "passthrough" in the description for the HDMI input to be sure, and/or call Sony to be sure.
