Sharp Aquos remote control stopped working

I have a Sharp Aquos LC-37D62U 37" 1080p LCD TV

Its remote control stopped working but here is the strange thing, only the digits and the up-down stopped working, I can still recall the channels via the 4 preprogrammed keys and the volume still works, as well as "Input".

This partial failure is very strange. I first thought that was the batteries and tried all kinds in it including alkaline, NiMH rechargeables, even lithiums, all to no avail.

And I can switch channels via the TV itself without the remote, so it doesn't appear to be the LCD unit itself.

Any of the Radio Shack Universal Remotes can work with this set with the pre-codes but make sure you get the latest 8-in-1. Or you can order a new remote from Sharp.

Do you think Sharp can replace this remote control per warranty?

Yes, I'm sure they will replace the remote, free of charge. I had a problem with my LC-37D4U almost a full year into my warranty, and they had no qualms about shipping me a new one after a firmware update didn't fix the problem. IMHO, Sharp has one of the best customer support systems for HDTVs.

The solution is to remove the batteries from remote (2xAAA cells) and then press all the buttons, especially the ones that don't work.

Put the batteries back in and you are set. I think it happens when you sit on it or something to that effect.

I tried taking out the batteries and pushing all the buttons, but that didn't work. I tried unplugging the TV and letting it sit a minute or more, then plugged it back in and the remote was working again! I was wondering what I was going to do without a Mute button, and I sure didn't want to have to buy another remote.

Hopefully, when the other doesn't work for someone else, they will see this and it will help.

I have an LC-C4655U/LC-C5255U, but am sure these techniques will help other models with the same problem.

I have had Sharp TVs since I graduated from college and never had a problem with any of them. When I bought a new one I gave the older model (still working great) to family or friends.

Then I decided to get a big TV. I loved it UNTIL.... After having worked perfectly, the remote stopped working in the middle of a hour-long program. First, I noticed that the mute would not work during commercials (yeah, those irritating ones). Then I found I could not change channels except manually on the TV itself (going from 4 to 124 was pretty frustrating).

I changed the batteries with new ones I had at home. Then I bought fresh batteries. It still did not work. I tried buying a "universal" remote but it did not work either.

I emailed Sharp customer service several times and never received a response. I tried calling them but only got an automated recording saying they were busy and to call back at another time. Of course, there did not seem to ever be a good time because they were always busy (too many Sharp products NOT working?).

Finally, I put the big TV in storage in my basement and bought a smaller TV from another brand.

I hated changing brands but felt that Sharp product quality did not seem to be dependable any longer. [Since I had never had to contact Sharp customer service previously, I cannot say whether quality has slipped there also.] I wasted a lot of money on the Aquos and did not want to repeat that mistake.

To poster etc. for your solution to the remote control not working.
I have spent ages trying to find a solution online at the Sharp website but no joy there. I have also read the tv's operating manual back to front and inside out again no luck.
Finally....... after many web searches of a lot of forums I found the answer to my problem.
Also... it was a case of someone falling asleep on the couch and (most probably) lying on the remote.


Again, thanks for taking the time to post the solution. I almost gave up and was intending to purchase another tv (like rescuemom I am a loyal Sharp TV owner) and am very disappointed with Sharp.
