A good way to get a perspective on the whole EW/insurance business, is to look at life insurance. It's just like gambling. The insurance company is betting you will live a long life and you are betting that you will die young.
Even when everything else was crashing, insurance companies stayed afloat. Take AIG for example. Their investment side crashed big time, but the insurance end of the company is still alive and kicking. If it gives you peace of mind and you can ignore the fact the insurer is going to come out on top 99% of the time, by all means buy the warranty. |

I'm going to be purchasing an extended warranty for my Samsung LCD HDTV, if it did have a complete failure after the 1 year warranty I would not have enough money saved up to replace it. In the next 1-2 years I plan on upgrading my AVR to one with HDMI 1.3 inputs, I can't afford to buy a new AVR and another LCD HDTV! People who make a good living might be able to take a chance at not buying an extended warranty and have plenty of money to replace it after the 1 year warranty if it did fail.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the SonyStyle.com extended warranty. Hopefully all will be good.

I do not think the current HDTVs are as reliable as the the old CRT tube TVs we are use to seeing last for 15+ years. That kind of reliability came from many decades of mfg them. I think HDTVs will get there at some point, but they are not there yet IMO.
