I would highly recommend an extended warranty. Have you seen how many posts there are on this site alone with people who have problems with thier TV's? All brands too.

I have one of the new Vizio Envision series 1080p LCD TV's that I actually won through work. I bought the extended policy right from Vizio when I registered my TV. The warranty picks up after the normal 12 month warranty expires, so I got another 2 years after that for $100. In my opinion, very well worth it!

LCD's & Plasmas are great TV's, but I see sooooo many people have problems after they purchase, so go for it!

Keep it in perspective. "sooooo many people"??? If you think about it, people come on forums to air problems.
The number of people complaining on forums against the hundreds of thousand displays sold is a drop in the bucket.

Do you think everybody who does not have a problem joins forums to say how everything is working fine? No, they rarely say anything, so it's assumed everything is fine.

On the other hand, if you got a warranty extended 2 years for only $100 that is very cheap.

Default KDL52W4100 Extended Warranty

I just bought a KDL52W4100 LCD from BB for $1700 and I"m thinking about getting an extended service plan. Sony is offering one for $199 for 4 yrs and Squaretrade is offering one for $185 for 4 yrs.

Does anyone have any experiences with either Sony or Squaretrade? I've heard a lot of +ve feedback about Squaretrade but nothing as such for the Sony EW. Squaretrade also provides a 5 day service guarantee and if they can't repair the TV they credit the purchase price. On the other hand Sony doesn't guarantee the time they'll take to repair/replace.

Any ideas as to which EW is better?

I always like to stick with factory endorsed warranties.. usually fewer problems that way, even though they likely get repaired by the same shops.

Unless there is a big difference in price, and obviously it's small. I know Squaretrade does a lot ebay stuff.. have not really heard much about their service though.

Try Dtvexpress.com too; they are known to be pretty good and comparable to squaretrade. I hope you understand that you are taking chance with all of them though

What chance are you talking about? About the product failing or the service provided by either of these companies. I"m more concerned about the service provided IF I ever need - which I hope is never!

well to be honest chances of Sony product failing are less than these companies giving you hard time to fix the problem. If you read the reviews & comments on google; pretty much all of these companies have more dissatisfied customers than satisfied customers.

I am still debating whether to buy the EW or not for the same reason. It's like a insurance policy, but you are not sure about the reputation of the company . Hope it makes sense.

Makes sense!!

But in all honesty MOST of the people leaving review/comments do so to "vent" regarding the bad service they've received. Very few comment about outstanding service. So the statistic is skewed.

I'm more concerned about choosing a fair EW provider in the unforeseen circumstance that I have to use their service. One of the issues I have with Sony is their dead pixel policy - which for some reason is not published on their US website. However, in their Australian website they mention that they will replace the LCD only if there are 10 or more questionable pixels. I"m hoping the third party EW companies have a more lenient policy!!

Also, if the product is irreparable Sony might offer a comparable exchange whereas Squaretrade pays back the original purchase price. In that situation I have the option of buying the replacement of my choice rather than dealing with what Sony has to offer me as a replacement. Squaretrade also promises 5 days of repair/replacement time whereas Sony doesn't have any limit.

That is very true and when it comes to certain manufacturers, I think some people leave bad reviews on equipment or services they don't even own nor have used.

It has happened with Apple products for years, I read a bad review (from someone who said he had bought one and returned it) online for the iPhone months before it was available for sale.

Default Sony extended warranty new terms?

Called 877-865-7669 and was notified by Sony of their new policy(2 weeks ago) not to offer extended warranties to LCD TV owners if not purchased within 6 months of purchase date. Powerful reason to reconsider a high end SONY product. Tried to purchase extended warranty with them for my XBR4 1 month before the manufacturers warranty ran out......

Some thing to consider when buying stuff, but don't buy warrantys. Some credit card companys offer extended coverage through their purchase protection programs. If I purchase something with my AMEX, they extend the original manufacturers warranty 1 year. Mirroring exactly what the manufacturer provided. I just file a claim with them after the original expires. Granted it's not for 3 or 4 years, but it's better than nothing.

I have a Panasonic th42px60 i got 3yrs ago. never got an EW. so far so good. But i am getting delivered tomorrow a new Panasonic TCP50S1. I just may get a Panny EW b4 the 1yr ends. Was reading the panny warranty and came across this ... what does it mean to you?

"If removal is required to service the product, it will be at the discretion of the Service Centre and in no event will Panasonic Canada Inc. or the Service Centre be liable for any special, indirect or consequential damages."

so if the service centre has to remove the tv and they drop it down the stairs its my problem? Or is it while removing they gouge the wall etc its not their fault/problem?

It is their problem while in their care. That's what liability insurance is for.

Some people would prefer to spend $200-$300 extra now and not $2000-$3000 in two years.

Do companies make money off of extended warranties? Yes...boat loads. Can they potentially be a good investment? Yes, absolutely. To say they are a horrendous waste of money is a little short-sighted.

That about sums up my thoughts on the matter as well. I just plunked down some serious $$$ (to me at least) for a tv from crutchfield. im not a big fan of EWs but I ended up paying an extra $150 for a three year ServiceNet warranty. For the amount I payed for the tv it will give me some peace of mind.
