Default intermittent white flash on screen

hello everyone. im hoping someone has an idea of what is wrong with my TV or Blu-ray player.
so first off here is what i own: Both brand new this week:
Toshiba 40" LCD 1080p 40RV52U
Slyvania Blu-Ray NB500SL9
connected with HDMI cable.

when i watch SD DVDs i get these intermittent white flashes every few minutes. seems to be concentrated on the bottom half of the screen. i have tried playing the same SD DVDs in a playstation 3 and get the same problem. BUT i did not get the problem while playing a video game with it.

when i try a blu-ray DVD i got NO problems durring the feature film. BUT, when i watch any "behind the scenes" extras on the disc (that seem to be SD) i get the flashes again.

i also tried a different HDMI cable and in all the HDMI ports in the TV

anyone have any idea on what is wrong here? is this an obvious upscaling problem? and if so, is it the TV or the player?

thanks for the help! much appreciated.

I'm seeing the same issue on my setup as well, which lead me to this thread.

Occasional white flashes on my Insignia 47" LCD TV - seems isolated to DVD playback. I haven't noticed it while watching an HD DVD or Blu-Ray disc. This occurs on both my HD DVD player AND my PS3, both connected via HDMI.

I've read in another forum that this may be corrected by switching off the engery saver mode in your TV's options menu. I haven't tried this yet but intend to do so tonight (I can't find the link again, sorry).

Other than that, the only other solutions I've read are the usual 'use better cables' or 'upgrade player firmware' which I don't believe to be applicable in your case or mine.

If anyone else can share some ideas / suggestions it would be appreciated.

Thanks

I may have found the cause of the problem, but it could be specific to my case.

I originally thought the problem was isolated to DVD playback, but I experienced the 'white flash' while viewing a Blu-Ray disc on the PS3, which had me concerned that my TV may be defective. I had also noticed that the brightness (or possibly the contrast) seemed to adjust itself on occasion, usually during a fairly dark scene. I checked settings menu and disabled the 'dynamic contrast' feature, and haven't seen the problem reoccur (yet - fingers crossed, knock on wood). I'm guessing some lower-end TV's such as mine are unable to handle variable brightness adjustments with the same 'finese' as higher-end models. While I guess it could categorized as a 'defect' I have a feeling that if I were to exchange the TV I'd just see the same result. In the end, for the amount of $$ I paid I'm not complaining. The picture is still incredible, and I actually prefer having the dynamic contast feature switched off.

I have noticed on mine it's not through the HDMI but through the composite/component on my HD cable and like you it only seems to appear in movies not sports or other actual HD programming very weird, but it seems source not panel
