Question Choice between Sharp or Sony?

I got a prize at work and can choose between these 2 LCD televisions.
Sharp LC37D44U (Aquos) and the Sony KDL37L4000 (Bravia)

In searching reviews online, both models are getting similar reviews. I stopped into Best Buy last night to get a visual and only saw the sony which looks fine.

Any tips here?

Thanks.

Well after owning a 32" SHARP Aquos and a 46" SONY KDL-46W4100 Bravia, both are very good TV's.

IMHO my preference is Sony but giving fair props Sharp Aquos is also a very fine display I can only suggest you try to find a Store that also carries Sharp, perhaps CC so you can do a side by side ( the best test ). Good Luck and congratulations. Welcome to the Forum.

I bought both of my sets at CC.

I think my SONY is better then the SHARP was. But then again it is bigger too.

Sony forsure. Sharp is known for its banding issues. Banding meaning those granular pixels that are heavily prevalent on LCDs

Actually banding is uneven coloring regarding color gradients on the screen, usually due to poor backlight or color reproduction.

For example, where one may see a blue sky shown on the screen, there will be distinct differences in the shades of blue (bands) instead of a smooth transition between the shades.

Hi all,

Thanks for the tips. I decided on the Sony. I got out today and was able to compare the 2 sets live. They both look nice, but in the Sharp there was definitely more noise/artifacts in the solid color areas of the picture. So Sony.

Thanks again.
Bill

Don't you think those TV's were setup that way to make you think the Sony is better since their sales are down and they have lots of money to throw around for ads and product placement?

All things being equal, the Sharp Aquos has just as good of a picture.

Not really. I went to 3 competing stores, so I suppose that Sony could have colluded with them? In all 3 stores neither brand had superior placement unless they were doing some super subtle psychological trick.

It was a toss-up for me after searching for reviews online since both sets get similar reviews. Like I said in the OP, I'm getting the set cuz I won a prize at work and only have the choice between 2 models. The sony looked better so I'm not going to fret over it.

I'm not trying to dis the look of Sony's TV's, they do make very good TV's. I just want to make everyone aware of the sometimes deceptive sales/marketing practices of stores and Sony marketing.

In any case, I'm sure you will be happy with your choice and I hope it gives you many years of pleasurable HD viewing.

It must be all a huge conspiracy!

No, but nice choice man set that baby up and let us know how it goes. Both Sharp and Sony have very good TVs.
