Default Settings for Sony Bravia?

We got our 52" Sony Bravia LCD W4100 during black Friday! But what settings for picture/color etc are best? We don't have HD yet, but have ordered it. It's just regular Direct TV. Picture is somewhat grainy, I take it this is normal because it's not set for HD yet?

Turn the sharpness down to 0, that should help a good deal. Then get a calibration disc like Avia or DVE and adjust your TV to it's peak performance.

Get a calibration disc and tweak the settings.

Thanks, did some tweaking. But it looks like the screen outer layer is what looks grainy? I know it's not shiny, but should it look grainy?

Have you tried anything else, such as a DVD or Blu ray disc? When something doesn't look like you think it should, the first thing to consider is the input source. If the input source is putting out a sub-par signal, that is what you are going to see. So, it is possible that the Direct TV signal looks grainy, not your tv. If you are not putting in a hi-def signal, you are not going to get the best picture from your television.

Can anyone tell me if there is an HDMI in and out on a Direct TV HD DVR?

We want to make sure we can use two HDMI cables, one from Sony blue ray DVD player to DVR and also one from Direct TV HD DVR to TV.

Also do we need any special HDMI cable?

The DVR has no HDMI input so you cannot connect a Blu-ray to it and record.

A HDMI 1.3 cable is all you need. You can purchase high quality cables here for low prices - www.monoprice.com. There is no better cable no matter the price.

I don't want to record from blue ray. Just hook the blue ray to the DVR. Our regular DVD player runs through the DVR. I thought we did the same for the blue ray DVD player?

So we just run the HDMI cable from both DVR and DVD player seperately to the TV?

Yes that is how it's done.

Thanks.

Outer screen still shows even with tweaking. Looks like movement behind the front layer? This normal? I know it's made for non glare but wasn't expecting to actually see the top layer while TV was on.

Will this get better with HD service?

Question on blue ray player? Tried first blue ray movie and there are black bars on top and bottom. We set Player default to 16:9 mode. When we used that with normal widescreen DVD it took up whole screen? We thought our TV would display all widescreen, full on screen with no bars but still show all viewable content? Do we have the wrong settings?

By the way, DVDs look excellent on this TV! I can't imagine living without it. We love the size of screen and can't imagine anything smaller.

We look forward to seeing what regular and HD channels look like after HD gets installed.

You are viewing widescreen but movie are done in many visual Aspects and that is the reason you are seeing bars

Huh? So some movies will have black bars and some won't, even when they are all 16:9?
