He was speaking of letterbox bars on the top and bottom of the screen if I understood his reply.

16:9 is your display aspect the movies are done in different aspects, there is a thread on the forum that explains all the various aspects.

A 16:9 display has an aspect ration of 1.78:1, while most movies are either 2.40:1 (wider than the screen hence the need for black bars to watch it without distortion), or 1.85:1 which will result in almost no bars. I would say alomst half the mvoies use the wider 2.40:1 aspect ration now so you will have the bars and this is normal.

Thanks for info. We finally got our HD. But some HD channels have black bars on all 4 sides and some bars on each side and some full widescreen. How do I get them all in full widescreen? And why do some have 4 sides of bars such as Scifi?

Update: seems the scifi shows up with 4 sides with black bars, but commercials are full widescreen?

How do I get them all in full widescreen? You will have to adjust the screen size for each channel if you really want to fill the screen but it will distort the picture with artifacts. And why do some have 4 sides of bars such as Scifi? See my first answer, pseudo HD

Did my answers in red explain it enough?

But if the channel is HD, why wouldn't the shows and movies be HD and not have black bars.

Thanks again for all the info, much appreciated.

Now, we are watching our first Blue ray movie, and there is fuzzyness all over. Some parts look excellent, but then there is this hazy part and it looks likes it's moving? I thought blue ray movie on a blue ray player would be great. But not happy with the hazy screen. We watched a regular DVD with same player and didn't notice the fuzzy screen.

What settings do we want for watching movies?

HD High Definition refers to the quality of the image, what your reffering to is the filming aspect movie are shot in various aspects ( there is a thread specificly dedicated to explaining this) Your blu ray should not be fuzzy are you connected by HDMI, is your BDP set up properly and is your TV setup properly. Unfortunately these systems are not Plug n' Play.
