Default Samsung PN50A550 whites really dark?

Does anyone else that owns a PN50A550 notice that when there is an all white background the white is very very dark? I noticed the sammy is a lot darker then my old phillips plasma. It it is even more noticeable when there is an all white background! I asked the store rep when I went in to get a price adjust and when I saw the PN50A550 side by side other plasmas and lcds the white was super dark!

Other then that the picture is amazing!

I would suggest you get yourself a calibration DVD like Avia II or DVE. Using that you will be able to adjust your TV to it's best picture settings (brightness, contrast, color, tine, sharpness) which will adjust those dark whites you are writing about as well as the other mentioned things.

Once you do that, your TV will look much, much better, believe it or not.

Plasmas dim an all white screen for power/energy reasons since that is when they use the most power on white/bright scenes. LCDs work the opposite with more energy used to block the back light in dark/black scenes. In a dark room an all white screen would burn your eyes out so this has never been an issue for me with my plasma.

That being said, you could be seeing some of the issue because of your settings also, so getting a calibration disc is advisable too.

Default Blue Ray DVD cal disc or just DVD??

I googled the two disc you mention I noticed the AVI only comes in DVD while the DVE comes in a blue ray edition. But the reviews on the DVE disc weren't good compared to the AVI DVD.

Which do you recommend? Also I thought it was interested that the blueray was cheaper then the DVD by almost 1/2

I know there is a AVIA II edition out but I have the first AVIA edition and the test screens look rather poor in my opinion compared to the DVE test screens for all versions of it.

I own the SD, HD DVD, & BD versions of DVE so I guess that tells you which I prefer. AVIA has easier navigation but I prefer the DVE more and think it is better than the first AVIA version. I cannot comment about the AVIA II version, but it is still not in HD and costs double as you pointed out.
