Thats another thing that was puzzling me.... I guess I'll find out when I get the disk, but this TV unit has more tweaking abilities than many TV's.. yet the disk is obviously made to be used with any set.
So will there be settings that DVD suggest that some sets cannot access?... or will it be the other way around, whereas there will be settings and tweaks available in my menu that I most likely not adjust? I think you will find the the new Samsung models have more picture adjustments available in the user menu than most other manufacturers. On the Samsungs you are unlikely to be told to make any adjustment by the calibration disc to a control to which you do not have access. And it is also likely that some controls need not be adjusted. I have a Samsung plasma, which I think, is not as "bright" as the LCD-- I can't even imagine viewing anything in Dynamic mode; it is just too bright and intense-- and if you adjust it "down" where you can comfortably watch it, there is some loss of detail in dark scenes. But I really want my TV to look real, natural-- not "better" than life-- and with the Samsung you have all the controls to have it any way you like it. Me thinks, you may not like the picture you end up with after an accurate calibration. And that is fine-- but doing an accurate calibration is an excellent place to start tweaking the picture to your personal preference. |

Thanks Rick... this is exactly what I was hoping for.
The Dynamic mode is the only place where DNIE is avaliable as I like the crisp detail it brings out. However the Dynamic mode is rediculously bright, and the DNIE is a bit overkill, so they both need adjustments downward... maybe they made that mode for those who like to watch in the back yard in the middle of the day! ..LOL! Anyway, yes after toning things down I really like the picture except that the blacks are too solid and have loss of detail "which I like" in the darker scenes.... so far, I haven't found a way to bring that out without losing the sharp crispness and bleaching things out in the brighter scenes. I will indeed be fun to play with it, as if I can improve on this already spectacular picture, it will indeed be a marvel to behold!

You can get better shadow detail by turning off an contrast "enhancements" that are turned on.
Another thing to remember is that you could turn the brightness up to improve the shadow detail but that usually washes out the colors more. The way to offset this is to increase the color saturation level. All these settings effect the other correct settings, so changing one usually requires changing one or more other settings.

It is not often any enhancement does much good at all if you want an 'accurate' image. On occasion they may help a noisy or otherwise poor SD image, etc.
But forgetting to use an enhancement is usually a misdemeanor, and throwing them on can result in a felony (that is to say, it's a crime to assault a good picture)...

For anyone interested in some very "easy" settings that are amazingly identical to some very good settings post calibrating.... I think the dark shades may be even better for what its worth.
I've tweaked my original settings. These are very easy and fast. They are good enough that I challenge anyone to try them against their settings on thier "movie" setting and bound back and forth with the "tools" button and see which one looks the best. I"m sure there is allot of satisfaction in doing a full calibration yourself on your own TV, just to make sure your particular set is the best it can be, and I plan do do just that since I got my calibration disk today. Since the mode that will be used for calibrating with be "movie", and these settings are under "dynamic".. it will be fun to do my best calibration and then bounce back and forth to see if I can actually improve these settings. Go to your menu to your picture settings and: 1. Pick your mode as "Dynamic" 2. Backlight... set at 6 3. Contrast… set at 55 4. Brightness… set at 45 5. Sharpness… set at 80 6. Color ….set at 55 7. Tint (G.R) leave at defaults of G50/R50 8. Detailed settings will be greyed out. 9. Go into "PICTURE OPTIONS" and set Color tone…. to Normal 10. Digital NR at off 11. DNIE…. set to "ON"" 12. All other options here will be greyed out except "Auto Motion Plus".. I set at "High" for full 120Hz.
