Default Samsung Screen Stretch?

I just bought a new Samsung LN40A550 LCD -- and I am using a Comcast HD Box -- (Motorola).

I am trying to make the picture fill the whole screen on Non-HD channels but when I use the wide-screen fit option instead of 16:9 it fills the screen -- but the picture extends over the edge of the TV.

Is there anyway to stretch the picture and not have it go over the edges of the screen?

Thanks so much for your help!

I have a Sam 32" and their is a choice called 'stretch' on the menu. I think it's under one of the picture settings...

Yeah that is basically the equivalent of what I am using -- they just renamed it to "screen fit" I guess.

My problem is that it stretches the screen too much -- to the point where I am unable to fit the entire picture on my television. I am currently using the stretch option on my Panasonic and it fits perfectly, however on the Samsung I just got I lose a portion of the bottom of the screen because it simply doesn't fit -- if I adjust the position of the screen in the options I can get it back but I then lose the top.

Basically its like its stretching the picture to fit a 42 inch TV instead of a 40 for some reason. Are there any options to adjust this?

There is probably a setting in your cable box to always allow the stretch option. I think in the Mot box's internal menu you could try 480i or 480p on the SD line, and one may give you the permanent stretch you want. Check here:

For cable box settings and how to adjust them.

Thanks clearday, I got it fixed within the Samsung menu -- almost to where its perfect.

The only other issue I'm having now is for some reason the screen position adjustment(s) I make don't save. When I turn the TV off or switch sources it resets to the stretch / wide-fit where part of the bottom is missing.

In the Samsung book it says you can save the picture size and position settings for each device, however I dont see a menu or anything for that. Is there something I am doing wrong?

Thanks so much for your help,

I wish I could help you but I really don't know the reason your settings don't hold. I still think you might have better luck adjusting some things in the cable box, but check around for some specific forums about your tv, usually other owners are the best source of info: avs forum dot com, display devices, lcd flat panel forum would be a good place to check.

Default I had this problem too...similar but different

I had that stretch problem too. Checked and tweaked EVERYTHING you can imagine on my cable box (shaw) and TV (Samsung LCD), problem was actuully on the remote, there was an HD/ZOOM button that was pressed accidentally - solved the stretch issue. Thought I would share
