at best buy the sony is about $50 more. and though they're both 1080p, only the sony will accept a 1080p signal via four 1080/60 24p HDMI inputs (HDCP), two 1080/60p component inputs and a 1080/60p PC input. the samsung accepts up to 1080i and upconverts. so taking into consideration that whichever i choose between these two models will be used for xbox360 and blu-ray watching, which is the better tv?

IMO, the Sony 40V4100 competes with the Samsung 40A550 instead of the 40A530. 40V4100 & 40A550 are the top line models with 60hz processing.

For 40 years I have wanted to buy a Sony. In the old tube days, Mitsubishi changed my mind and my sister is still using them.
When I made the HDTV jump, I almost bought the 40" Sony your looking at. The picture was awesome. It didn't dawn on me at the time that BB had every TV set to Brilliant Mode, and NO lighting in the TV section. HHGregg had 2 of the 4 walls of the store filled with HD units, stocking everything I knew existed. They had it set up that way so you would have at least one wall in a very bright room, and the other in a shaded room. When I looked at the Sony in normal light, It didn't stand out like it did in the dark. I narrowed it to the 40 Sony, Samsung & Mitsubishi. I really thought them to be equal, but brand loyalty and a lady returning her one day old Mitsubishi for a 46" Mitsu, I got it for right at half the price of the Sony. When I went back for a larger unit for my surround sound room, I wound up in the indentical scenario. I had added Panosonic to my list, but quickly dropped that idea. Great set, but my room is too bright for plasma. I had a new Sony 52", Mitsu 52, and Samy 52 to choose from. I had my wife rate them, and I did the same. We both rated the Sony last, she liked the Samy and I liked the Mitsu. The salesman set up chairs and the 2 tvs side by side. It was a 100% tie in my eyes, and my wife loved them both, but gave the Samy the edge. We finally got the Samy at the best price I found on the net. Bottom Line: Samy The HD & BD Images were as good as any 52" in the store. The Samsung RULES when I play my Standard DVDs. The Samy also gets the nod on stretching SD programs (You can move the entire picture up or down, so you can hide logos, or read CC if needed.) The upconversion was so good, it sealed the deal. Dislikes: The sound was horrible. If the unit was not going to my surround sound room, the audio would have killed the sale. The Samsung is the winner, IF you like to play with fine tuning for hours. It is far more complex than the Mitsu when adjusting video. I went though the video section close to 2 hours until I was comfortable with the settings. I also found out the 3 choices of picture were much better than my manually tweaked settings. Samy Selling Point: Upscaling my DVD's and SD. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bottom Line: Mitsubishi If you want a TV that lets you choose from 3 versions of picture, the Mitsu is your set. You plug it in, it scans ONLY ports that has something connected. You can learn the menu and all the settings in 30 minutes. Dislikes: Upscaling DVD & SD. I don't think it will ever touch the Samy, but after I reset video to factory it helped. (I also found out my DISH DVR offers different upconverting sizes that the set does. That helped also) Selling Point: Ease of use, and the factory speakers were MUCH better than the Samy, and much better than I expected. BIG discount since it was an open box sell helped. I'm not knocking the Sony at ALL. To be honest, I can't remember ANY unit I looked at, DLP, Plasma or LCD that I would not be happy with. Shopping can be over whelming. It took me a couple of months of researching to narrow my choices down to 5 makers. However, now is a great time to be shopping. The new models are arriving, so don't be afraid to bargain. All they can say is no. |

Hi,Don't be biased by buying lcd hdtv.Go for your budget and the quality. If you can get the same quality and advanced functions with other lcd hdtv which will compatible to your room with less price then go for that.like samsung has the qualities. The picture quality is fantastic and one advantage of this TV over the LN40A550 ,the sound is WAY better on this TV and adjusting the back-lighting to accommodate YOUR rooms lighting. you can use Warm 1 setting for blu-ray/DVD movies and normal/standard(with low dynamic contrast on) setting for regular HDTV viewing. PS3 games look great too(game mode) .Thanks...
