Thank you all for the information.

Really, is $1.10 per month (from pappy's post), or even $1.56 per month (the Crutchfield average for all 50/52" sets), or even $3.51 per month (the worst plasma vs the best LCD) really "a bunch"?

And it should be noted that the difference between the best plasma and the best LCD is a mere $0.47 per month . . . that's a pretty small bunch in my book.
Exactly why I am not taking power consumption into consideration. IMO if you are spending $2,000 on a tv, the minuscule power costs over the course of a year are easily justifiable.

mobiushky, thank you for your info. That was very helpful and reaffirmed what I had suspected already.

Part of the reason I posed these questions was because while I am shopping for my father I was also looking to upgrade myself (the Hitachi just doesn't cut it. ) I searched and searched for a 5080 at a reasonable (for me) price but either the price was too high or the dealer was out of stock. Pretty much every online vendor and B&M I tried is sold out and has no clue when they are getting more in. I believe I read that they discontinued this model to prepare for the 08s and that was one of the problems of trying to find it. Anyway, I ended up getting the Panny from onecall.com last night at a good rate with shipping, etc...I would have liked to get the Pio but I have no doubt I will be ecstatic with the Panny. Although I am a little concerned with the claims that the anti-glare coating gives the picture a muted look and three HDMI's would have been excellent.

I believe that I will most likely recommend the same set to my father and if he feels that the distance is too large then he can trade it in for a larger size. Thanks again for all your help!

Chris

"Chris, viewing distance is very subjective." WTF. Last time I checked 1 foot was 12 inches all over the globe. What is subjective is what a particular individual can see, i.e., his/her visual acuity over a certain distance. Please don't mislead. The distance charts and recommendations are generally based on the assumption that the viewer has 20/20 vision, natural or corrected.
