Default New to flat panel and have a question about dead pixels

Hi all, I just purchased my first flat panel 2 days ago. Its a Vizio 50" plasma.

Picked it up from Circuit City. The picture is lovely.

The one thing I noticed this morning was that there is one single dead black pixel in the middle of the screen.

From a distance you do not notice it. But up close it really bugs me.
Just the fact that it is there.

Is this a normal occurence for flat screens ? Should I return it for a swap out?

Thanks for any input.

Each manufacturer has their own policy for how many "dead" or "stuck" pixels they consider acceptable.

My policy is no bad pixels are acceptable on a brand-new display, regardless of what the manufacturer's policy is.

Most stores have a no-questions asked return policy within a short period of the purchase. Find out what the store policy is regarding bad pixels. If they would give you a hard time about a bad pixel, don't try to exchange it, return it for credit--no questions asked--then buy a new one after checking it out for bad pixels.

they will try to tell you that there is an acceptable amount of bad pixels and it is normal to have a few bad ones. I would return it or exchange it if I was you. I think that it is a load of BS that even one dead pixel is acceptable. I have seen lots of LCD tv that are fine so just get another one. This is probably a TV you want to have around for a while so make sure its perfect to start with.

Thanks for the tips.

I took the Vizio back, and they brought out a new one to test before I took it. They hooked it up and it wouldnt work.

So now having a really bad feeling about Vizio, I opted for a samsung 50" t5054.

The manager knocked off 14% for my hassle on the Vizio, so I left with a new 3 year warranty, and the Samsung for $100 more than I originally paid for the Vizio.

So far its been up and running for a few hours and looks just fabulous.

Thanks again.

My monitor had a 3 or 4 dead pixels when i got it, and they corrected themselves.

Stuck pixels are a whole different story, but completely dead pixels typically correct themselves, or can be 'massaged' out by rubbing the display with a soft cloth.

They can be caused by cold weather while being delivered, or being shaken while in transit.

how do you tellthe difference between stuck and dead pixels? and explain the rubbing with a soft cloth method please.

i picked up a Samsung 40" LCD last night and have 3 greenish blue pixels that can only be seen from a foot awat or closer and only if the screen is black or very dark.

well, it wont work if your tv has a glass screen. it only works on computer monitors, where you can touch the panel directly.

You literally just take a soft cloth or t-shirt, and put your finger exactly where the stuck pixel is, then turn off the tv with your other hand, and apply pressure to the area where the pixel is.

You're trying to put just enough pressure on the panel to re-distribute the fluid, as it's most likely pooled to one side.
