What is HD?

I want to first start of by saying hello to everyone (I'm a new member). I have been researching these two particular LCD HDTV's for a while now, and I just can't seem to make up my mind! I was wondering if you guys could help and see what you would do if you were me. First off, the $ isn't an issue so you don't have to worry about the "more bang for your buck" because I really just want the television thats going to be better in performance (clarity, sound, etc.), reliability, quality, warranty, and features. Here are the two models: the Philips 32" LCD HDTV (model # 32PFL5332D) and the Sony Bravia M-Series LCD HDTV (model # KDL32M3000). You can look at them both on Circuit City's website (I cannot provide the links because I haven't made 5 posts yet...lol.)
The only differences I really see between the two are A. Contrast Ratio is 3200 on the Philips and 2500 on the Sony B. The Philips allows 1080P through the HDMI cable and Sony 1080i. I also want to mention that I'm going to be using the Television for watching TV through basic cable (no box) but my cable provider does have some unscrambled HD channels, I will be buying a Playstation 3 in the near-future which I will be playing Blu-Ray GAMES & MOVIES. I know the PS3 supports 1080P through the HDMI, but I don't really know if theres such a big difference between 1080i and 1080p. It will be mounted on a wall across from my bed approximately 7-9 feet from the end of my bed (pillow) to the wall. I really appreciate the help and input! I'm just very confused! Thank you!!!! |

Sony. I wouldn't buy a Philips with someone else's money, regardless of the "specs" it may have.
Also, in that price range, there are better TVs than that. Look at Toshiba, Sharp, or Samsung. |

Check out the Toshiba Regza line of LCD TV's. I believe them to look much better than the 2 you mentioned.

The Sony you mention will more than likely be my bedroom set after today. My local Sears affiliate has it for a net of 624.30 after discounts B4 taxes.
Looks to be a great choice, but I mainly am going with it because it is a good price + a name brand with good service backup. The Philips? I would have no problem with it at all. They are a major player and make a great product. They don't have the mystique that the Sony name has, so you would probably not be able to 'WOW' the friends and family as much with a Philips.

One more thing.
I am not sure how important this is, but if possible check and see if the Phillips or the Sony has what is called 'rigid columnar spacing'. I was in Wally World last week and it was pretty easy to tell by pressing on the LCD screen with one finger. The Vizio and Philips lcd panels obviously had this new technology, as the pressure mark of the finger was way less pronounced. Others that I checked showed a strong finger imprint. This is a new type panel being built by LG (others? don't know). The rigid division between pixels is said to give longer panel life with less degrading of the image due to shifting of the pixel walls. That said - not really sure if this really makes a difference in the long haul. It is just some of the latest technology that is being offered up in lcd panels.

Made the drive in to Sears. The % that the lady told me of only applied to appliances. Back to the drawing board? Just not ready to spend that many dollars for a bedroom TV. (Viz at Wally World may be the option )

I would look into a SHARP. I have a 32" SHARP Aquos and absolutely love it. You can find which model in my signature.

I really appreciate all the replies! From what I gathered, it seems that the Sony would be the better of the two, but also Samsung & Sharp I should consider aswell. I'll prob be researching some more Samsung's and Sharp's then make my decision. Thanks again!

I ended going up with the Viz 32 from Walmart - but I am glad I have 90 days to return it. Maybe I can get the color better and not have to do that.
My wife and I are just spoiled by the natural color and depth on the LG 42" PDP.

Neither of the sets that you mentioned are 1080 sets, only Sharp makes two 32" 1080p to choose from. All the sets mentioned can accept a 1080 signal, but none except the Sharp (ex. LC-32D62U) can generate a 1080p picture. I got mine from newegg for $999.99 delivered, but you can view one at Circuit City. Best Buy also sells another Sharp 32" 1080p which adds another HDMI inputs plus $100 to the price tag.

And don't forget to check out the highly praised Toshiba Regza. Many people fail to consider them but they are comparable with the best if not the best, that is PQ wise.
