Similar problem here...

I have a new HP-T5064 here...

And a Motorola 6416 Cable box.

I've hooked it up with component cable and was quite impressed... using these settings int he cable box:

16:9
720p
4:3 Override - 480i

It looked fantastic, really nice.

But the component cables were so bulky... so I switched out the component for a HDMI cable.

Now I can't output my SD as 480i... I get the "Mode Not Supported" message.

So I've tried outputting my SD as 480p and it looks MUCH worse. I guess the Samsung was doing a better job at scaling and deinterlacing than the motorola box.

I want to output my SD as 480i with the HDMI. Is there a fix?

BTW, I think my HD almost looked better with the components rather than the HDMI... is this normal? Is HDMI just more sleek and "neat"?

thanks in advance... and GREAT FORUM!!

It's normal that components look better than HDMI. More color saturation. I have my 4:3 set at 480p and it looks better than 480i.

Looks like I am a bit late to the party on this one however I had a similar issue with my Sammy and Scientific Atlantic, the issue is that my Samsung would not accept any 480i signal over HDMI, only 480p, 720p and 1080i. So in order to fix that I had to turn of the receiver and hold down guide and info on the STB at the same time and then set the resolutions excluding 480i.

Default 2 Fixas

This is tried and tested and always on a freakin Samsung..

well the 360 still works, make sure a disc isn't in, so here are the steps to do it blindly <<<<<<

1.Turn on the 360
2.go all the way to the right on the dashboard(blindly)
3.press A 3 times
4.go up
5.press A.
6.That should change the resolution to 480p and then you can change it to whatever you want.

If this fails wrap a towel around your xbox vents for 15 mins or so to over heat the CPU once you have a red light take the towel of re-boot and bobs your uncle all working.

Default Observations

Here is a friendly observation from a cable guy, I deal with these issues daily and have found that the biggest issue we are seeing with equipment and HDMI is Samsung. Either our Samsung digital boxes do not like other brand TV's or the Samsung TV does not like our other brand boxes. We have however discovered that using a Samsung STB with a Samsung TV seems to fix MANY of the HDMI issues. With Blue Ray or DVD I do not know if Samsung has a product but if you have a Samsung TV and can get a Samsung Cable box you should be fine just keep in mind not all service providers have them and if they do it may not always be possible to get that specific equipment. Same seems to go with Samsung Recievers with HDMI input and output. They do not like other brand equipment the TV's as well do not like other brand Recievers.
Now mind you I might be wrong but this is what we have been observing here for the last year or so, amazingly none of us thought it would be a good idea to google the problem until now. If this has been covered already I am sorry I skipped towards the end after confirming my thoughts on Samsung TV's.
Keep up the good work and when I get time I am gonna check more of this site out as I believe it will be VERY beneficial to my trouble shooting...

Default Its not just Samsung

IN the short period of working at a cable provider, I've noitced this same problem on our Motorola cable boxes. the DCT 6416s, 3412s, and 3416s have this problem and usually sending an initialization hit to the box resolves the problem but then again, sometimes it's still there. This also only happens on HDMI or DVI connections. From what I understand, it can be a few things:

1. Resolution--When changed from 480 to 720P to 1080i or something similar, the TV loses permission to talk with the cable box and gives the "not supported mode" issue. Maybe this is Vice Versa but I'm not sure.

2. Protocol conflicts between devices--This I'm not 100% sure on either but this could be the underlying issue or rather the main problem (and everything else is just a symptom to this problem).

I know this thread is rather old, but I'm also looking to find the solution to this problem. Its an ongoing thing and I'd like to get it resolved.

Hello guys, i am a new member. I recently brought a HDMI cable for my xbox 360 (ive checked, it's compatible) and i connected it to my Samsung LE19R88
BD, i have taken out all cables and wires apart from power, aerial and HDMI cable, the TV has the port so i guess it should work, i have tried the cable and same xbox on another HD TV in my house and that worked straight away. the message that it is not supported has popped up, i have tried the thing one of you suggested about turning the TV on first and then the Xbox and the Xbox and then the tv but neither have worked.
Any help you guys have would be appreciated lots.
Many thanks

Welcome to the forum!

Try turning the display on AND on the HDMI input that the device is connected to BEFORE turning on the source device. Some devices only send the HDCP handshake on initial start up, so the display must be able to respond that it is also HDCP compliant.

Hope this helps!

Default Mode not supported

All: I had the same Mode Not Supported error when I upgraded my TV set top box for my Samsung Plasma and used an HDMI cable for the first time with the set top box. The problem was that I had to program my set top box under the settings menu and switch it from component to the HDMI setting. That fixed the problem.
Good luck.
