About 2 weeks ago I bought a 40" Sony XBR2 LCd, the picture is amazing. It replaced my hitachi 57" widescreen 1080i projection TV. The sony is a 1080p TV, but unless I buy a blue ray dvd (still waiting to see which format is going to be the one most used) I have no way of getting a 1080p signal. Would I be better off returning this thing and getting a 1080i LCD? Thanks

no you should be good. You will really like it when you already have 1080p when future things really use it. The Some HDDVD players broadcast in 1080p as well so either way would be good. I would keep it.

There is no such thing...1080i left with the CRT which is what your Hitachi 57" is. Panels are either native 768p or 1080p. If you like the picture of your LCD, stay with it. 42" Plasmas usually don't need to be 1080p do to their size. I have a 50" and very satisfied w/ its' native 768p picture.

All LCD's are progressive, so your Sony displays it's images as 1080p (1920 x 1080 progressive).
It will display a 1080p signal as is and it will de-interlace a 1080i signal and convert it to 1080p for display. All you've done is spend a tiny amount extra to be able to accept both 1080p and 1080i signals, rather than just 1080i. Even if you don't use that ability for years, the small incremental cost is well worth it to me to "future-proof" the display. The high price is not to cover the 1080p input capability, it's to buy a high-quality LCD with 1920 x 1080 pixels, which you need in order to see all of the resolution of a 1080i signal anyway. |

Just out of curiousity, what made you go from 57" to 40"? That's a BIG step down.

Seems like a lot of people are going from a mammoth CRT with the huge footprint to a sleek flat panel. Step down in size yes, but huge step up in PQ and style, plus you get to reclaim space in your room.

The size of the room it was in. When I went down to the 40" , I also got to ditch the stand that was next to the 57". So it reaaly opened up the room and made it look bigger. And, the design of the XBR2 is quite awe inspiring.

What a breath of fresh air!!! I am so often amused and annoyed when I hear so many people preaching "bigger is better" in all things. If some people want their living rooms (dens, rec rooms, etc.) to look like AV studios or they don't mind the TV set to be the dominant feature in a room, that is fine for them. However, I doubt that the average person feels this way. Aesthetics DO count and people should rely more on their own personal tastes - everything else will fall into place.

bigger is better, since alot of flat panels are mounted on the wall.

jeeezzzzzzz, you guys amaze me!!!!!
for you, fine, no problem . . . . just state it as "your opinion" and consider that the majority of people don't think just like you. Not everyone want the TV set to be the total overpowering focal point of their living room. |
