Default Samsung FP-T5084X/XAA - 1080p but only 1080i input?

I am quite confused, as this Samsung model perports to be full 1080p compliant, but according to some online specs it only supports a 1080i input on Video, which is further confirmed by my Sony PS3 only being able to output up to 1080i.

How does this work? How may a TV be 1080p compliant but then only take a 1080i input? Should I take it back, as I thought I was buying a 1080p capable TV to compliment my Sony PS3.

Insight?

Although confusing to the consumer, that is fairly common with the early 1080p flat panels and I think they shouldn't advertise without educating the buyers as to what the TV does or doesn't do.

If the TV has the proper ability to de-interlace the signal and then display it in it's native resolution of 1080p (which it should) then in the real world it makes no difference because you will be seeing a 1080p picture being displayed on your TV.

I know it sounds silly to take a 1080p source send it to your television as a 1080i signal and then your TV de-interlaces the signal to show it in 1080p but, that is how several early version 1080p TVs do it.

They are still 1080p TVs because that is precisely what you will end up viewing even after all then technical signal fooling around.

I hope that helps make you feel better and other then that problem, how is the picture quality on your plasma?

The picture quality is great, and I know that the 1080p over 1080i difference is minuscule to mere mortals such as myself, but my heart about stopped when I realized the TV was only accepting 1080i input. I have done a fair amount of recent research, but did not uncover this little tidbit and I agree it should be more front and center when declared a ´Full HD 1080p´.

But, if the result is that I get a true 1080p view, and the TV just has to work a little harder to make it happen, then so be it. But, would still like to have a clean signal through just being the purist I am.

Which of the latest similar models do 1080p end to end with no translation in the middle? Does it truly not matter anyway so I should just chill out and not take this set back?

No, not if your satisfied with the picture.

Most of the new just out 1080p TVs accept a 1080p signal but ultimately if your televison de-interlaces the signal properly that should make no difference in the picture you see. and they will right now charge you more because they are the newer models.

If they were the same price and you could exchange for no out of pocket then maybe but, just maybe.

If you have a TV that works great already, why take the chance, you never know maybe the newer model has some unknown defect.

Why fix something thats not broke?
